One of the best books on grief
By Diane Kronmeyer
Sandra pulls you in to her personal life and grief and showsyou not only how to survive it yourself, but how to help others aswell. It is heartwarming and honest. I've read the first version, "Living Through the Loss of Someone You Love" and this new version has all of the same poignant personal stories plus more insight and help on the grief process. Sandra offers up her own personal--and successful--experience in addition to the "self-help" format. As you're reading this book and wake up grief-stricken in the middle of the night and ask yourself, "Is this normal?" the answer you get is from someone who's been there--and who also shows she truly is an expert. Great to give to someone who is grieving when you just don't have the words yourself.

Healing for the Emptiness Inside
By Ferree Hardy
If the loss of your loved one has left a gaping hole in your heart, this book provides keys to healing. The author's 38-year-old husband died of brain cancer after 16 months of treatment, leaving a 10-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter, and stress-induced lupus to manage. Her welcoming and conversational writing style, plus years of experience as a teacher, funeral home representative and editor for Focus On The Family make this a book appropriate for caring friends and caregivers in addition to those grieving the loss of a loved one.
Each of the 13 chapters are well-organized with clearly marked points for easy reference. A list of simple reminders at the end of each chapter provides helpful summaries and quotes. A study guide makes this book useful for grief support groups and widows discussion groups.
I especially recommend "Will I Ever Be Whole Again?" for widows of cancer, widows with children, and as a guide to grief during the first two years of loss.

Read it and read it again...
By Kensington
I bought this book when I was seeking a book to understand the things my sister in law was doing after her husband died. It just so happened that the book I went to find was not there, and I bought this one. I read it, and I read it again. I've read it numerous times and highlighted things that touched me deeply. I always recommend it to anyone I know who is facing grief, or wants to understand and help someone who is.

Military Decision-Making Processes: Case Studies Involving the Preparation, Commitment, Application and Withdrawal of Force, by Kevin Doug

President Bill Clinton, speaking as might any commander-in-chief, on the eve of his decision to deploy ground troops to Bosnia in 1995, declared he had "no responsibility more grave than putting soldiers in harm's way." Such a statement suggests that a study of the decision-making process associated with the weighty matters of using force would be enlightening. Indeed, it is. The decision-making process is far from standardized nor is it simple. While all individuals associated with important decisions about national security and the lives of America's service members take their responsibilities seriously, the processes by which they reach their conclusions are varied and complicated. The book traces eight traditional and emerging theories or models of decision-making by first explaining the components of each model and then by analyzing its practical application through three case studies. Each chapter concludes with a discussion of the utility and explanatory power of the particular model.

Case Studies are focused
By William C. Hagen
Eight models or theories of decision making processes are presented. The eight are described and then three case studies for each model are presented with a short summary of utility following.
In the epilog the author acknowledges that the models are more useful as tools for historical analyses than as guides to be used going into a decision making situation—the real world is much too complicated and events evolve too dynamically to capture in a mechanistic ‘recipe’.
As presented by Dougherty the models are not crisply defined but rather generalities about leadership styles. As a consequence, the case studies seem more focused on the execution of the decision than on the decision itself. An example is the Chapter Six case study of the action of the ‘Blockade Board’ in the Civil War. It starts with Lincoln’s decision to blockade the Southern ports which was a decisive act but then focuses on the evolving methods of execution. The author makes some attempt to knit the case studies to the models but the relationships are often obscure.
Many of the case studies concern the determination of policy rather than the determination of specific courses of action. This seems contrary to the book’s title which implies a concentration on military decision-making—in our society, the making of policy is not a prerogative of the military. It is important, however, that policy be fixed because there is a natural lag between the making of policy and its execution so a wavering policy usually results in muddled execution such as in Viet Nam.
The main value in the book is that it underscores the importance of defining a path—any path—leading to a successful outcome of a crisis. Any one of the eight models presented can work but can also lead to disaster if objectives are ill-defined or resolve lost.
A lesson that can be drawn from the book but not explicitly addressed is that the lower in the decision making hierarchy, the more probable it is that the decision can be successfully executed. Truman’s decision to drop the atomic bomb is a notable exception. Another latent message is that decisions not to act and even decisions not to make a decision can and often do have historical consequences.
This is a good book if only for the interesting case studies rather than the models and processes described.

Military
By Denis E. Mcgrath
Dougherty writes with surgical precision and offers excellent case studies and good documentation that is appropriate and timely to his theme. This is a book that can be appreciated by a wider audience than military strategists. Anyone in government or public service at a decision making level would do well to examine the components of the eight models he so carefully details. As an added bonus it was enlightening to see snippets of real historical events through a different looking glass.

A superb overview of Greek culture
By E. Terry
Garland does an outstanding job of presenting a readable, easily understandable overview of daily life and culture among the ancient Greeks. His book destroys a number of myths about ancient Greece, and avoids the trap of becoming too closely engaged with the subject. He remains objective throughout, presenting neither positive nor negative spin on Greek lifestyle, and avoiding political bias. Garland clearly has no axe to grind. Furthermore, he presents the material in a way that modern readers can understand; he places the subject matter in the context of the times, but does not assume detailed knowledge of Greek culture or history by the reader. His writing is a bit dry at times, but that's unavoidable when presenting detailed descriptions of lifestyle and culture.

I do wish the publisher would release another print run at a more reasonable price. $55 is unreasonable for any book. I suggest buying it used.

In spite of the high price, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the way the ancient Greeks thought and acted. It has definitely improved my understanding of Greek history.

Great work but opinions needed to be left out.
By A. Hair
I love this book, the detail was great and he was honest about how they lived instead of the romanticized view we have of them. It showed the pitfalls of their society, for instance their view toward women. My problem with this book was the author's opinion toward the Gods. He would often mention the Gods spheres of influence and then say how they didn't live up to the ideal. One example that comes to mind is the mention of Zeus as the God of justice and then immediately after says "though he was far from consistent in his pursuit of that aim. Moreover, his own behavior fell lamentably short of setting a standard of morality for human beings." (pg. 135) My problem with these statements is the author fails to differentiate between the Gods of the myth, the stories told to entertain and the Theoi (Gods) of the religious cults who had a very different personality. I also thought an inclusion of Plato and his views of the Gods and the myths would have been helpful. Overall though the book was a great read with the right amount of information.

Defeating the Totalitarian Lie: A Former Hitler Youth Warns America, by Hilmar von Campe

“The main preoccupation of my parents during the Nazi years was to save us children from Nazi indoctrination” says Hilmar von Campe. At 10 years old, like every other child, he had to enter the Hitler Youth and at 18 he was conscripted into the army. He was a gunner in a tank in the Yugoslavian theatre fighting the Soviet army, became in 1945 a prisoner of war of the Communist Tito government and in the same year staged a sensational escape crossing seven borders.

His reports about the Nazi years and the war are a lesson of history as he brings facts unknown to most Americans. He describes the why-it came about, his own moral responsibility and how his life changed. The Nazi system, like any other totalitarian system, he says, is based on lies. Lies are at the root of the problem in the world. You can’t defeat them with money or armies but only with the truth.

Hilmar compares developments in American society and in the world today with what happened in pre-Nazi Germany and warns America to turn away now from the destructive ideological path we are on.

Review
You are in a unique position to illuminate the mindset that allowed Hitler to rationolize the extermination of millions of Jews – given your personal travails during that tragic era. Americans would do well to heed your insights into similar dangers facing the today’s world.

Dr. James Dobson
Founder and Chairman of Focus on the Family

Hilmar von Campe has led a life which epitomizes Christ’s message of salvation of sin. The reader (of your book How was it Possible?) will be profoundly inspired and educated by Hilmar’s eloquent account of his journey from one complicit in evil to a man who has become a Christian exemplar par excellence.

Howard Phillips
Twice a presidential candidate
Chairman of the Conservative Caucus

Free societies survive by self-correction and the unceasing search for truth. Hilmar von Campe’s life story exemplifies that ethic of honesty, from his early years in the Hitler Youth to his impassioned witness as an American patriot today. You will treasure this book.

John Andrews
Former President, Colorado Senate
Host, Backbone Radio

I was tremendously impressed with the main theme of the story and of course I openly cried, as I read about the suffering that your dad had to endure….I applaud you as a practicing catholic, for your emphasis on the importance of keeping his commandments. I marvel at your insightfulness in targetig the ACLU as a destructive organizationand that we better sit up and take notice.

Albert Chestone
FBI agent (ret.)

The story is dynamite with explosive potential to shape the moral composition of America and awaken its atrophied national conscience. Your personal saga is intensely dramatic and deeply human evoking a torrid melting pot of emotions and sparking countless morally rich ideas through your candor in sharing your failures, tragedies and triumphs. The transposing of the impact a nation’s morality and attitude toward God has upon its destiny with your inside story of Hitler’s rise and fall as a German citizen, along with your insights into the shrouded portions of the War’s history is huge. It is a very powerful way to communicate truth and holds much promise. I think it has tremendous marketability, and incredible potential to shape the thinking of your readers.

HappyHour enforced by law?
By M. Malone
Will the day come when you are either at work, at home, or at a pre-designated 'holiday' attraction....or violating the law, & subject to arrest, for being somewhere other than the forementioned ? Has the swastika returned disguised as a big yellow 'Happy Face' that says "Have A Nice Day". Imagine what the Third Reich might've been had the foundation of blood-purity been deleted. Yes, the NAZI agenda is alive & well....and flourishing in the minds of powerful & influencial individuals....most of whom call the United States their home. The middle-class confuses the upper classes, and gives hope to the lower classes.....how simple it would be to just let the rich get richer and the poor KEPT RIGHT WHERE THEY ARE...eliminating the middle-class exsistance all together. Afterall, we are better people....er ...I'm a better person than so-n-so because I live there, and drive that, am married & the parent of them, work for this global corporation, am fanatically protective of my credit rating(moreso than of my children!), and won't bother to hear anything from anyone else because I've been told who to listen to for the truth. The rest of you suckers are gonna get on the box cars, 'your luggage will follow'.......and "POOF!".....a perfect society with no crime & everybody doing their best....oh, and it's so colorful...all races and religions are represented....such structure & discipline....efficiency......the poor, sick, & elderly relieved by 'acts of God'. Those are beautiful, designer, drapes in the windows of the new DEATH CAMP offices......BUT this is all my interpretation...read the book and WAKE UP ! Take a look at the future & leave it behind!!!

Leaders Reflect the People Governed
By Samson
I lived in West Germany for 8 years before the fall of the Berlin Wall and spoke with Germans who had experienced Hitler first hand. Hilmar von Campe's story and explanation for what happened sounds remarkably like theirs. Some people would like to say that this book is warning of the perils of unbridled Democratic Party power; others of unchecked Republican Party exploits. Campe, like those German citizens I knew, argue otherwise. They would say -- look in the mirror. The Bible says (and I'm paraphrasing here) that people get the leaders they deserve. If George Bush bothers you -- look in the mirror. If Barrack Obama bothers you -- look in the mirror. Campe's central premise is that the collapse in moral standards has set the stage for the rise of National Socialism (NAZI) / Communism / Liberal Fascism, (or some other brand of radical socialism)in the United States. If you didn't get that when you read the book, then re-read it with an open mind. The past 20 years of national politics have seen ever greater abuses of power, a more and more dumbed down electorate, elections based increasingly on cult and not substance, and a progressive collapse of morality. This goes beyond political parties; beyond the Republicrats we are force fed every four years; to the heart of what is ailing America and how to get back on track. This book represents hard core analysis from an insider who lived it; not theoretical intellectual hype. Get the book. Read it. And THINK.

great book. a should read for all in America
By Caroline A. Bennetti
This book tells how Nazi Germany was formed. The reader will see very similar things happening in the US today. Especially since Obama has become president. The Nazis were not facists, they were the National Socialist party. It CAN happen here in America if people do not pay attention

Ok until the implausible ending
By Bostjan
The book was actually a good read and the story believable until the last few chapters where the story just took a sharp turn from the realm of plausibility. It also felt somewhat rushed compared to the previous chapters. For me this ruined the whole story. I'd rather skip it - there are better stories to spend time on.

By Brit
I thought that this book was incredible. It provides the closure I look for in books. It's consistent in the plot structure, painting a realistic vision of a dystopian society and a near dictatorship, and I found that once I started reading I couldn't put it down. The author provides an emotional and psychological workout that leaves you drained but hungry for more. I can't wait for the next work from this author. The characters are relatable and lovable, and I found myself getting attached before I even knew what was happening.

One of my Favorite Books
By Geoffrey J. B. Edwards
Death March breaks a lot of taboos in terms of both content and writing style. I'm a big fan of movies like Troll 2, The Room, Birdemic, Fateful Findings, and Pink Flamingos so maybe that is part of why I like this book so much. I can really imagine it receiving a direct to VHS film adaptation. If your gold standard for entertainment is The Avengers then this book might not be for you. Some of the reviewers complain about the ending. I'm sure they can think of 'plausible' endings but a boring predictable ending wouldn't make the book better. It wouldn't fit in the context of this book.

I found this book very informative!
By Temujin Ekunfeo
I have just finished reading Christopher Columbus and the African Holocaust by Dr. John Henrik Clarke.

I also think that I should mention that I read a review of Christopher Columbus and the African Holocaust by Kevin M Quigg dated July 18, 2008 before I purchased Christopher Columbus and the African Holocaust.
Even though it is a subject that I was quite familiar with I found this book very informative. For a work of only 108 pages on the topic I found it to be well referenced, with a six and a quarter pages bibliography and a very good index.

Having heard Dr. Clarke lecture many times and I had the honor to have had a wonderful conversation with him many years ago it struck me that this brief but informative work had the "sound" of Dr. Clarke "speaking." Speaking to a very particular audience as an African American I felt sure that his words were directed at me. As a scholar, however I am sure that his obvious "I am speaking to my people tone" did not affect the facts that he presented.
Mr. Quigg took exception to not only Dr. Clarkes tone but the message that was presented as well.

Mr. Quigg criticized Dr. Clarkes work for having a lot of rage with many half-truths thrown in.
Rage, perhaps righteous indignation might be a better term. After all Dr. Clarke is a descendant of the untold millions of Africans transported to the Americas on slave ships as am I. I think that we at the very least have a right to some modicum of rage and a full measure of righteous indignation.
I do not think Dr. Clarke's perceived rage or actual indignation had a negative effect on the research and scholarship presented that was presented. Furthermore Mr. Quigg offers scant evidence of the half-truths which were allegedly thrown into this work of scholarship.

Mr. Quigg took issue with Dr. Clarke for calling Christopher a Thug, what Dr. Clarke stated was that "Columbus was the best known of a number of Western thugs and murders who have been presented to the world as heroes and discovers" this statement was completely accurate as far as I am concerned. Columbus was the spearhead of an invasion by European nations which sparked more than an African Holocaust but rather a global Holocaust and genocide that in truth was well beyond realm of being thuggish and that has lasted right up to this present day.
Columbus was as were his successors all of whom were acting under a Papal bull which authorized them to "subdue all Saracens, pagans, and all other unbelievers even to reduce them to perpetual slavery."

If you come to my homeland on a mission to "subdue me and even to reduce me to perpetual slavery" it is clear to me that you are not on a mission of "discovery with an eye to peaceful commerce. So it was with those who were successors of Christopher Columbus. Though I cannot recall Columbus ever being referred to as Conquistador a Conqueror he was a Conquistador" in all senses of the word. His successors however wore the title "Conquistador" with pride and were worse by far than their predecessor.

It was very accurate for Clark to have written that Columbus was the best known of the murdering invaders sponsored by Spain and Portugal who under the sanction of several Popes set out on missions to conquer, subjugate, enslave and plunder all of the peoples that they encountered.

It was Hernan Cortes the "Conquistador" who subjugated, enslaved and plundered the Aztecs in what would later be called Mexico; I would wager that most Americans would recognize his name as well or as quickly as that of Columbus.
It was Francisco Pizarro the "Conquistador" who subjugated, enslaved and plundered the Incas of would later be called Peru; I would wager that most Americans would recognize his name as well or as quickly as that of Columbus.

As for the half-truths Mr. Quigg states referring to Dr. Clark," he says there was only one surviving child of Henry VIII and that was Elizabeth. Professor, what about Edward and Mary."
What about Edward and Mary? Edward VII the child of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour was born in 1537 and died in 1533 at the age of 15 I would not consider that surviving.
Had Edward VII actually survived Elizabeth may not have in all likelihood ever mounted the throne of England.

In the case of Mary I she was born in 1516 and died in 1558. Mary who was 17 years older than her half-sister Elizabeth mounted the throne of England in 1553 after the death of Edward and the death of Jane Gray whom Edward bequeath throne to and whom Mary had Jane Gray beheaded after a 9 day reign from the Tower of London, then mounted the throne, and died 5 years later in 1558 at the age of 42. Elizabeth I was 25 at the time of Mary's death.
Had Mary I actually survived Elizabeth would not have in all likelihood ever mounted the throne of England and England. Had Mary I actually survived may well stayed a Catholic country and could have been one today.

Since I don't wish to traffic in half-truth I will mention Henry FitzRoy, 1st Duke of Richmond and Somerset, Earl of Nottingham who was born15 June 1519 to Henry VIII and Henry's Mistress Elizabeth Blount. Henry was the only illegitimate child that Henry VIII ever claimed. Henry FitzRoy 23 July 1536) had Henry FitzRoy actually survived Elizabeth may not have in all likelihood ever mounted the throne of England.

Elizabeth I was born in 1533, she mounted the throne of England in 1558 at the age of 25 and ruled until her death 1603 at the age of 69. Elizabeth I sat the throne for 45 years, 40 years longer than her half-sister Mary I. Call me biased if you will but, dying at the age of 69 after a 45 year reign sounds very much like surviving to me.

Mr Quigg goes on to state the following about Dr. Clark "He claims 100 million black Africans were killed or put in slavery. I think most historians would disagree with this analysis."
As a researcher I am more than aware that scholars particularly historians disagree all of the time.

One source I read stated"Between 1492 and 1776, an estimated 6.5 million people migrated to and settled in the Western Hemisphere." Even to this day precise figures are not available. Hugh Thomas in an appendix to his book, "The Slave Trade," gives us figures which falls in a range of from not less than 8,000,000 to not more than 11,970,000, finally Thomas writes. "I prefer to think that the appropriate figure would seem to be something like 11,000,000, give or take 500,000" and that is just for the Atlantic slave trade.

We must also keep in mind that there is no record of those who died on the way to the slave castles on the African coast, that there is no record of those who died on the "Middle Passage" across the Atlantic. The US abolished slavery in 1865 with the thirteenth Amendment to the constitution slavery continued in Puerto Rico until 1873 and in Cuba 1886. Brazil was the last New World country to abolish slavery, which it did in 1888. There is no way of knowing how many captives died as the result of dumping an entire cargo of captive to avoid being arrested as pirates by British Squadrons patrolling the West African coast for slavers in the 112 year span between 1776 and 1888.

Again there is no way of knowing how many died, since records were only kept for those who survived and were sold and there is no proof of how accurate those records were. As Dr. Clarke pointed out, there was nothing a stopping a slave ship captain from giving a shot count and selling the difference for his personal profit.

We must also not forget that the "Triangle trade" in the Atlantic" was not the only destination of captives from Africa. Untold millions of Africans were sold across Indian Ocean, there were those who went North, Northeast many of whom were sent from slave port on the East coast of Africa experienced captivity in the lands of Islam as far as India. Some captives were sold as far East as China! Ronald Segal tells us in his book `Islam's Black Slaves," that large numbers of captives crossed the Sahara on the various trade routes to satisfy the demand for slave labor in Islam and farther East another good example are the Sayyad or Siddi of the Sind region of Northwest India who were Swahilis from the East Coast of Africa or Ethiopian peoples who are called Habashi or Habshi in Arabic.

Regardless which region of Africa they came from or to what lands they were carried way as captives. Captives they were and so "100 million black Africans were killed or put in slavery" which doesn't sound unreasonable to me.

I will close with a statement that I opened with: For a short work of only 108 pages on the topic I found it to be well referenced, with a six and a quarter page bibliography and a very good index.
I can recommend this work by Dr. John Henrik Clark without reservation.

Our History!
By Malik_77
This book, though short touches on African, Caribbean, South American, Arab, Jewish and European history in a way that many college electives, undergraduate programs and most k-12 curriculums would never mention. Only through personal research can I say I was aware of most of the facts in this work. However, the lessons therein grabbed hold of my heart. Dr. Clarke writes in an unapologetic, firm manner to drive home a point to displaced Africans and Africans at home. We can change this seemingly unchangeable dilemma. We, however must change our view of Africa and African people, understand we are African and understand our contributions to the world in NOT just Egypt but in Ghana, Mali, Timbuktu, the Sudan, Ethiopia, and Europe. We were in the Americas prior to 1492. The richest man to date was African, the first smelters of iron were African, The first International centers of education were in Africa and run by Africans long before Oxford and Harvard. This book should be mandatory reading in every black home in America and serve as the foundation for our self esteem. Our history was not that of savages and spear chucking monkey men who needed European saviors to keep us from destroying ourselves. We were not formed through the fires of slavery and Jim Crow and should not be content in praising those Africans in America who were the first to be fully accepted into European institutions. We had our own, many times over, and can have them again.

Well-detailed resource for Pan-African understanding of Columbus
By The Maat Project
Dr John Henrik Clarke's book serves as a well referenced meta-analysis of close to 100 other books written concerning Christopher Columbus. He rightly lays the groundwork for questioning Columbus's character, intentions and most importantly to me the damage to aboriginal American and African cultures in his wake. Use this book as a guide to other primary or secondary sources you may need. Primary sources used include Columbus's diary entries as well as speeches written addressing the Portugese, and secondary sources include many works by well-varied authors on not just Columbus but the general state of the world before and after his entry into the Western world. Granted this work is agendized to fit Dr Clarke's target audience, but it is still a job well done.

Eschatology, by Hans Schwarz

A complete introduction to the Christian view of the future.

What does the Bible say about the future, about death, about human destiny and heaven and hell? This volume presents a clear and comprehensive introduction to the Christian hope for the future that is particularly relevant to today's world.

Hans Schwarz guides readers through the range of opinions on this fascinating subject, showing how our understanding of eschatology has developed and laying out the factors that must be considered when speaking meaningfully about the Christian hope here in the twenty-first century. He surveys the teachings about the future in both the Old and New Testaments, discusses the views of Christian and secular thinkers throughout history--including the challenges posed by science, philosophy, and New Age beliefs--and explores the major themes of eschatology, including death, immortality, and resurrection.

A Fuller Seminary Student Review
By Nicholas Quient
In the multifaceted world we inhabit, eschatology can encompass a multitude of disciplines: philosophy, science and theology. Hans Schwarz has offered the world an exceptionally readable volume that attempts to synthesize the best of all the aforementioned disciplines into a broad survey of the last things. He treads where many systematic theologies do not, especially in exploring various secular and progressive worldviews, seeking the truth in all of them. He largely succeeds and offers the reader his findings in three major parts.

Part one engages with the diversity and unity of both Testaments as they relate to eschatology. The historical background of the Old Testament "...was basically a death-driven culture" (32). As is often the case, existentialism and the knowledge of death are never far from each other where "...the living know that they will die but the dead know nothing" (Eccl. 9:5). Schwarz notes the heightened "emphasis on the this-worldly aspect of life" (36) and because of this reality, to live seventy or even eighty years was desired above all else (Ps. 90:9-10), though these years were still a breath. Though his survey is expansive, Schwarz could have shown that the Old Testament attests to a longing for justice and that punishment of the wicked (Ps. 110:6; 139:18-20) does not happen in this life (Job 21:7; Jer. 12:1). Because of the lack of justice in this earthly existence, YHWH will act in the next life to bring judgment upon Israel's oppressors, thus suggesting Israel and the world's need for cosmic justice and the possibility of resurrection of the righteous and the wicked (Dan. 12:2; Isaiah 66:15-24).

Based off Schwarz's findings in the Old Testament, he moves on to show that the New Testament has a more developed outlook on the question of eschatology with special attention placed on fulfillment in Christ. For example, Matthew "wants to show that the Old Testament promises have found their fulfillment in Jesus" (84). Schwarz then rightly insists upon continuity between the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament as both Testaments testify to Jesus and his mission and exaltation, though this was not as developed because the importance of Second Temple Judaism is left largely unmentioned. In regards to Jesus' messianic understanding, Schwarz correctly claims that, "[Jesus] never delineated a chronology of life eternal nor a geography of the beyond" (80); this biblical obscurity has resulted in over two thousand years of speculation on the part of the Church, and it is indeed the most troubling aspect of Christian eschatology; especially since it lacks any sort of future details and relies on fragments to paint a broader picture. In sum, the biblical portraits are fractured and leave us to gather up the various portions. However, for Schwarz the biblical tensions are less worrisome because "Christ anticipates the resurrection of the dead through his own resurrection, thus providing us with a foundation for hope" (96). The resurrection of Jesus is paradigmatic of our future experience and this is congruent with Paul and John's teachings regarding this matter (1 Cor. 15; John 5:29).

Part two reflects the larger debate between science, secularism and philosophy as they all relate to eschatology. Schwarz covers discussions over various theologies including process, feminist, liberationist and pluralism: the advocates comprise Wolfhart Pannenberg, John Cobb, Jürgen Moltmann and Leonardo Boff among others. Each theologian's perspective is examined and given a place at the table for a fair exchange, though not without critique. Process theology is specifically singled out and one must ask to what extent Christian doctrine is maintained amongst a pluralistic worldview--a point of view decidedly not shared by the New Testament. Because of this, Schwarz notes "Cobb's proposal seems more akin to the Hellenistic striving for oneness as demonstrated by Platonic and Aristotelian ontologically grounded philosophy. The Christian faith, however, is characterized by individuality in unity" (169-170). This is a successful critique and could be pressed further to include the imagery of incorporation of human beings into Christ's body, his Church (1 Cor. 12:12-28), illustrating the necessity of all Christians, American and other, citizen and immigrant, and male and female, to be one in status in Christ (Gal. 3:28). Individuality is maintained and corporatized, allowing personality to thrive within community. It is also worthy to note the claim that Scripture appears soteriologically exclusive rather than pluralistic, as the famous Shema (Deut. 6:4) proclaims a strict Jewish monotheism. Paul also affirms (and expands) this famous text in 1 Cor. 8:4-6 to include Jesus (see Gordon Fee, Pauline Christology, Hendrickson, 2007, 88-94), making pluralism (and subsequent process thought) difficult to accept on the basis of biblical texts as the exclusive divinity of Christ is attested above all other faiths (John 14:6).
With his mind tuned to environmental concerns, Schwarz adds to the discussion concerning the ecological crisis, where "life is sustained only be exploiting the inanimate world" (195). Life feeds on life, and this appears to be an apocalyptic outcome of consumerist exploitation (196), which compounds the problem of the greenhouse effect (196-199) and overpopulation (201-202). The issue is that "humanity elevated itself into God's place...and `for the glory of God' was replaced by the glorification and deification of humanity" (205). We live in a seemingly limited creation and this brings up an ominous question: was earth meant to sustain human life forever? Human progress has taken a left turn in the dark and Schwarz thankfully recognizes that without hope, humankind has nothing left for itself: "...what can we, as Christians, actually offer in terms of the content of hope?" (243). Schwarz does not despair, and pushes on with the task of offering hope to a dying world.

In the final part of his work, Schwarz covers four controversial areas of Christian eschatology: setting an actual date for the end of all things, the millennium and its various flavors, universal salvation and purgatory. Schwarz flatly rejects any attempt to place a time to the coming of Christ as "not about outguessing the Lord but being faithful to the call" (321), and like many church fathers (Luther, Augustine) he discards the timetable method and opts for hope. In doing so, his points stands well under scrutiny as the New Testament never set a date to the return of Christ. As regards the millennium, He takes the greatest exception with dispensationalism and concurs with Dale Moody; "we could simply discard these [end times] theories as `undue speculation over highly symbolic teachings'" (335). The damage done by this apocalyptic teaching is not glossed over by Schwarz and it has no doubt "been misused for political and religious purposes" (336), especially within the context of modern fundamentalism which misses the purpose of apocalyptic imagery: to bring hope to those who are oppressed, "not...in a triumphalistic manner, but as a pastoral comfort" (337). Schwarz is certainly on point with this admonition, and those of us who have come out of fundamentalism will resonate because of the entrenched emphasis on the rapture and fighting culture wars instead of the necessity of justice for widows and orphans (James 1:27).

Considering the doctrine of universal salvation, Schwarz pointedly concludes "we have little biblical ground to go on for a universal homecoming or a restoration of all things to God" (337). In light of the numerous judgment texts in Scripture (Isaiah 66:24; Matt. 10:28; 25:41-46; Jude 7), one would concur that universal salvation is indeed a difficult theological proposition to embrace. However, Schwarz does not engage the strongest Universalist arguments from the basic proof texts (Rom. 5:18, Col. 1:20; Eph. 1:10). This reveals a missed chance to answer lingering questions in the minds of many evangelicals who opt for universalism on the basis of such verses.

Because of his his rejection of universalism, Schwarz is committed to the two-fold outcome of human destiny. Unfortunately, Schwarz leaves himself open to criticism from another side in the Christian debate as Annihilationists (or Conditionalists) would affirm the twofold outcome of eternal judgment and share his views of an eternal punishment. However, Schwarz rejects annihilationism in favor of eternal conscious torment (395-97; 402) by means of a question: "how can there be an annihilation of anybody if there is no escape from God, since God is everywhere, even in death and beyond death?" (396). The question is a non sequitur and one could answer it this way: as it took a divine act of creation to impute life into that which was lifeless (Gen. 2:7), so it is also a divine act of destruction when God destroys both body and soul (Matt. 10:28). Human finitude is evident in that only God is immortal (1 Tim. 6:16) and any life given to us is derived from the Creator, a sentiment that Schwarz explicitly affirms (257). Thus any eternal life, a phrase that seems restricted solely to the elect (e.g. Matt 19:16; 25:46; John 3:15-16, 36; 10:28; Rom. 2:7; 5:21; 6:23; Gal. 6:8), is denied to those not in Christ.

Curiously, while Schwarz mentions Oscar Cullmann several times throughout his book (73n, 119, 140), he betrays no awareness of the annihilationist arguments in Cullmann's Immortality of the Soul or Resurrection of the Dead? (Wipf & Stock, reprinted 2000). Cullmann's words are powerful: "For Christian (and Jewish) thinking the death of the body is also destruction of God-created life. No distinction is made: even the life of our body is true life; death is the destruction of all life created by God" (Immortality, 11). Scripture seems to suggest death (Ps. 68:2; Is. 66:24; Luke 13:3,5; John 3:16; Rom. 6:23) and eternal destruction (2 Thess. 1:9) as the end result of the wicked--not their eternal torment. To suggest the traditional doctrine of eternal torment seems to promote a vision of final eschatological dualism, one that does not seem to fit comfortably into Schwarz's theological vision of "the completion of the universe" (404).

Eschatology must be seen not as despair, but as hope. Proleptic anticipation, which views the resurrection of Jesus Christ as the commencement of the event of new creation, is the operative lens by which Schwarz concludes his volume. We see everything in light of Christ, and we "anticipate proleptically this future along the avenue which the Christ event provides" (407). Schwarz has written a truly magisterial book and there is much to commend. His depth is illustrated by his familiarity of diverse theologians and his ability to faithfully represent their perspectives even though he may passionately disagree is a model of charity. The chapters relating to science, ecology and scientific reason were especially insightful, bringing material to light to readers who otherwise would not have known about external worldly developments. Because of this inclusion, theologians will now be able to further benefit the church, allowing us to both engage and learn more as we progress in mutual respect towards the future. While a reader may dispute his interpretation on certain doctrines (such as his lack of engagement with annihilationism and universalism), his irenic tone epitomizes Saint Paul's admonition in Rom. 12:9-21, especially since we are called to "love one another with mutual affection" and we "extend hospitality to strangers."
