From the dramatization of local legends to the staging of plays by Shakespeare and other canonical playwrights to the exploration of contemporary sociopolitical problems and their effects on women and children, Mayan theatre is a flourishing cultural institution in southern Mexico. Part of a larger movement to define Mayan self-identity and reclaim a Mayan cultural heritage, theatre in Mayan languages has both reflected on and contributed to a growing awareness of Mayans as contemporary cultural and political players in Mexico and on the world's stage.

In this book, Tamara Underiner draws on fieldwork with theatre groups in Chiapas, Tabasco, and Yucatán to observe the Maya peoples in the process of defining themselves through theatrical performance. She looks at the activities of four theatre groups or networks, focusing on their operating strategies and on close analyses of selected dramatic texts. She shows that while each group works under the rubric of Mayan or indigenous theatre, their works are also in constant dialogue, confrontation, and collaboration with the wider, non-Mayan world. Her observations thus reveal not only how theatre is an agent of cultural self-definition and community-building but also how theatre negotiates complex relations among indigenous communities in Mayan Mexico, state governments, and non-Mayan artists and researchers.

One of the Few Books that's Worth Reading

I have many books that I have bought, read a third of the way through, and put aside as more important things come up. This book is one where I put work aside to make time to read. A strange situation for me.

This books covers a lot of area that I would not have otherwise thought about. It may not go into great depth about things, but that's not it's point, I think. It just wants to tell you enough about the hundreds of things you should think about and if you need any more information, you're free to look into other sources. But for what you should know, this book covers it, and it does it very well.

Thank you, authors, for not wasting my time and money. I just wish others would follow your example.

I chose the 5 star rating because the book was well written, realistic and easy to follow and understand.

This book covers every step from making the decision to become an entrepreneur to understanding sales & marketing and profitability. Cell Signaling Survey

The book is a good survey of cell signaling pathways in development and disease.It is marred by poor editing in parts despite the fact it is the Third Edition and the publisher is Oxford University Press after all. The graphics help save the day and they are both instructive and illucidative.

Simple and direct.

The book is to the point without being too light. I read this cover to cover fo a course. I found the diagrams simple and easy to follow. The text includes simple descriptions of pathways and mechanisms of cell signaling. It also included some small pieces of information that were related and made the subject matter more memorable. It is a quick read with good points.

Good book, but not the best.

This is a good intro to cell signaling book; however, it isn't as thorough as sometimes I needed the information to be. I had to frequently refer to Albert's cell textbook to fully grasp concepts from my cell signaling course (even though this was the required text).

Not the easiest book to learn from

The book is written well and gives some real-life scenarios in the problem examples; at times there is a bit of humor involved. However, working on the end-of-chapter problems, you really have to figure out how to work them out on your own. So far, I've seen that very few of the problems can be worked out by following an example in the text. It can be kind of frustrating at times, you will really need outside instruction on working most of them, ie from a college professor...

worst textbook ever

I'm studying to go back to med school. I've survived organic chem and other tough classes, so it's pretty much just physics standing between me and my goal. If there is anything I know how to do, it's study. So when I glanced through the text, saw the short (very short) chapters, I thought, "Hey, Physics isn't going to be too bad- this looks easy enough." Boy was I dead wrong.

The chapters and in text examples--if they can even be called that-- fall far short of explaining how to approach problems. I found myself having to buy other physics books to learn how to do basic problems that this text should have demonstrated. The WileyPlus (publisher) website promises lots of online examples, but I have been disappointed by that too. The online problems are slightly more thorough than the text, but that's not saying much. If this is your assigned text, I would be looking for a supplement asap. It does such a remarkably poor job of teaching the concepts. I get that you have to learn to apply your knowledge to new types of problems, but this text doesn't even give you the basic foundation with which to approach a new problem. I don't think physics needs to be as hard and frustrating as this book makes it. There have been far too many nights I have just wanted to smack my head against the wall out of frustration and utter shock that any publisher would publish such a crappy (there is no other word for it) book. And this is the ninth edition- you'd think it would be at least somewhat decent by now!

A good book, if you get the point

This textbook is for calculus based physics. As such the goal of the book is to introduce the concepts, the equations for the concepts and to some extent show how the equations are derived. It actually does not go into nearly as much derivation as it could. It is easier to follow if you have had more math, especially Calculus II and III. It introduces the topics one at a time, and in the examples throughout the chapter it tends not to combine the various concepts like the problems at the end of the chapter do. I think this is why many of the people who say this book is horrible feel that way.

The reality of physics problems is that there are so many ways to ask for the same thing, and because they are word problems they give you helpful information buried within useless information. Many times you need to solve for something the problem does not even give you, then use that and the information the problem does give you to solve for what you need. Many times there is more than one way to solve a problem, which can make the problems even harder if you cannot figure out the easiest path. Part of what you ultimately have to do is extract the useful information out of the problem, draw a picture of what is going on, then determine which formulas to apply, and the easiest way to get from point A to point B. The book could be twice as long (and hence twice as expensive) and provide more examples, but even so there would still be problems that you cannot intuitively solve (or even always know how to start) just by looking at them.

Ultimately it is the book's job to introduce you to the concepts (which this book does a fine job of) and your teacher's job (or tutor or study aid if you are stuck with a bad teacher) to help you apply the concepts by doing problems. The book does not spoon feed you and hold your hand through everything, but no textbook that you get for any college class does that. Especially not a class of this level. Is the book perfect? No. I have yet to see a textbook that is perfect however. As is the case with math books, I am sure physics textbooks vary by how good or bad they are. Let's face it you are not going to get a choice in which book your instructor picks, so whether you like this or hate it you are going to be stuck with it.

In a fit of anger, Robbie comes dangerously close to drowning a boy and sets off a chain of irreversible events; he must rely on his conscience to lead him toward redemption. Once again placing universal conflict in a historical context, Paterson gives a compassionate, absorbing rendering of an adolescent boy trying to break free from social and religious constraints. Grade 5-8-Paterson, so adept at capturing a sense of time and place, returns once again to mine the richness of small-town Vermont during the 19th century. Here, she reflects on the approach of the previous century as she follows the adventures of energetic, mischievous Robbie Hewitt, a preacher's son with a bit of a temper, from Decoration Day in May, 1899, to the eve of January 1, 1900. New ideas are circulating. Darwin's theory of evolution gets confused in Robbie's mind with atheism. When he decides that it is too hard to behave, that God is too hard to please, and that the world may end soon anyway, he declares himself an "apeist." Following a fight with his nemesis, he becomes involved with Violet, a poor homeless girl, and her alcoholic father, Zeb. While planning his own kidnapping for profit, he implicates Zeb, who is likely to hang for the crime. Robbie's own personal miracle from God, a ride in a motorcar, reaffirms him as a true believer. As in Jip (Dutton, 1996), Paterson tells a multilayered coming-of-age story of loyalty, courage, and the enduring values of family. With warmth, humor, and her powerful yet plain style, Paterson draws empathetic and memorable characters. Readers share the anticipation and the joy of Robbie and his father as they welcome the 20th century at the book's end.

Paterson is arguably the premier author among children's book writers today, and Preacher's Boy is another in a long list of titles (but not so long as to dilute her talent) that shows why. In this story, she takes a serious philosophical topic--what God wants from us and what we want from God--and shapes its profundity with irony and wit. It is the turn of the twentieth century, and Robbie, son of a preacher, is tired of trying to please God. Moreover, although Robbie's father is kind and gentle, it's not that easy to do what he wants, either. So when a fire-and-brimstone minister suggests that the world may be ending soon, Robbie decides that whatever time is left will be more fun without God in the equation. Like Huckleberry Finn (of whom there are many overtones), Robbie is willing to take his chances with eternity for the opportunity to do what he wants. But before long, Robbie has put his mentally disabled brother in danger, almost choked another boy to death in a fury, and masterminded a harebrained kidnapping hoax that might result in a man's execution. At every turn, Paterson splendidly balances Robbie's moral choices with pure entertainment, especially as it twists the plot. And though there are a couple of stereotypical characters, including a dirty vagabond girl and her drunkard father, even they are elevated because Paterson writes about them with humor and compassion. As the public demands more books with moral issues at their core, here's one that envelops readers with its principled reflections, instead of pounding them over their heads. Ilene Cooper

One of the Great Authors

A book by Katherine Paterson is always difficult to judge. The main reason is because she has written a truly great book--"Bridge to Terabithia"--and a number of others that are nearly as great. Because of this, there is a tendency to be a tougher judge of her books as if every new novel should be a masterpiece. Fortunately, Ms. Paterson lives up to the challenge time after time.
I am constantly amazed at how well Ms. Paterson is able to write in the voice of young person, creating very realistic characters. Though a bit older myself these days, I can identify very well with Robbie as he stuggles with the difficulties in his life. I am particularly impressed with the depiction of Robbie's relationship with his father and how he struggles to understand him. Also, the difficulties he has in being himself while at the same time trying to be the son of a good man who has an important and public job in his hometown.
Though I don't think any good book is really gender-specific to an active reader, I can see where young boys would find this book speaking to them a little more. Still, I would encourage anyone with a love of good literature to read this book. It is a stong depiction of an interesting character.

I had read 'Bridge to Terabithia' two years before for school and I loved it, so I figured that anything else written by Katherine Paterson would be just as good. I was right. I started the book because of the author, and I finished it because of the story.

Preacher's Boy is about a young boy in 1899 who thinks that the world will end with the year. His father is the town preacher, but Robbie, the boy, thinks that the ten commandments are too confining. He thinks that since he can't do wat he wants while he is a Christian, he will become an atheist. Unfortunantly, he doesn't know what they are areally called, so he spends the entire book calling himself an apeist.

This book is filled with laughs and funny situations, many of which made me laugh out loud. I would definantly recommend this book to anyone that wants a good laugh. This book is probably best for ages 7-14, although I think that anyone would enjoy it.
