Beware! The code in this book is in Objective C. So, if you're just starting out with development, chances are you want a book with code written in Swift.
The book seems to have some nice features to it and the authors discuss interesting topics, however I was discouraged by seeing the choice on programming language given that Swift is the new way to go.

Also apart from just explaining the technology the book also covers essential skills like AI programming, Physics and Multiplayer game development which are additionally required for game development. The book also touches on OpenGLES and covers in depth 3D texture mapping and animation for anyone trying to make the move from 2D to 3D game development. In this engaging history of a "1000-year fishing spree," Kurlansky (A Continent of Islands: Searching for the Caribbean Destiny, LJ 1/92) traces the relationship of cod fishery to such historical eras and events as medieval Christianity and Christian observances; international conflicts between England and Germany over Icelandic cod; slavery, the molasses trade, and the dismantling of the British Empire; and, the evolution of a sophisticated fishing industry in New England. Kurlansky relates this information in an entertaining style while providing accurate scientific information. The story does not have a happy ending, however. The cod fishery is in trouble, deep trouble, as the Atlantic fish has been fished almost to extinction. Quoting a scientist from the Woods Hole Biological Laboratory, Massachusetts, Kurlansky notes that to forecast the recovery of the cod population is to gamble: "There is only one known calculation: 'When you get to zero, it will produce zero.'" When something is said to have "changed the world," it is either a technological innovation or an article of trade. The North Atlantic cod is the latter, which may come as news nowadays, when it is best known as having virtually vanished from the Grand Banks, ruining the once robust fishing economies of maritime Canada and New England. Kurlansky introduces the delectable white-fleshed fish's long history by taking us out with some Newfoundland fishermen now employed in surveying the remaining cod population. But then he backtracks to tell an epic of transoceanic trade. Cod was for 1,000 years a commodity central to Europe's development and, through Europe, to development in North America, the West Indies, and Africa. Indeed, the Basques of northwestern Iberia and then the Norse discovered America well before Columbus when they probed westward, fishing for cod. Later, the fish became essential to slavery: the best dried cod was exchanged in Europe for goods to be traded for humans in Africa, while lower grades, still highly nutritious, were sold to feed West Indian plantation slaves. That is just some of the grand-scale history Kurlansky relays with maximum readability, plenty of handsome illustrations, and a 40-page appendix of superlatively annotated recipes. Ray Olson

In Cod We Trust!

The marvel of Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World is that anyone could write a book this interesting about a subject so lackluster- a fish so boring that it does not even struggle when it is caught, instead allowing the fisherman to haul it up without a fight. Somehow Mark Kurlansky was able to make the codfish interesting enough that I continually drive my co-workers insane, insisting that they should read this book. Wars have been fought over it, revolutions have been spurred by it, national diets have been founded on it, economies and livelihoods have depended on it. The lowly cod really is the fish that changed the world. This book is a sober reminder of the impact of man on the environment, but it also a enjoyable and readable book filled with curious cod tidbits and a historical cross-section of odd cod recipes. In the same vein as The Perfect Storm or Longitude, this book is more entertaining than either of those maritime titles, although unlikely to be made into a movie starring George Clooney. If seeing the title Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World made you crack a smile, then you should read this book and tell your friends about it, so that they too can wonder if you're just making it up.

There's a reason it's widely recommended...

If you're one of the many people who's been caught up in the wave of highly focused historical books that have innundated our book stores, then this book is for you. Kurlansky presents the history of one of the most mundane items possible (excepting the humble potato and there's a book on that too) with an engaging and informative style. The book presents as a mix of history, current events, and recipes.
It misfired at times. There is not discussion (or recommendation) regarding management of resources or planning for the future of our fisheries. And some absolute statements (such as the superiour development of Basque cod cuisine) deserve to be challenged. And Kurlansky doesn't consider the fishing history of Native Americans; although, it may be for lack of documentation (I don't know; I'm not a historian; that's why I read these things).
In spite of this, it's an outstanding book. It meets the two key requirements for me in this regard; one, I recommend it to other people who report back on how much they liked it; and two, I'll read it again.
Buy it. Read it. You'll probably enjoy it.

Fishy Recipe for History and Evolution

There's a cartoon in Matt Groening, the nine types of professors. One is the single-minded type, as in "The country that controls magnesium controls the world!" His main drawback is that he could be right. Cod sort of reminds me of that. You may not have known how important or popular this particular fish was to most of our ancestors in Western civilization, but, according Kurlansky, Cod was practically like bread. It was easy to fish, there was a ton of it, and once Europeans learned the various ways of drying it (with cold and/or salt) all people could think about was trading this staple. Yes, Kurlansky's book is single-minded, and at times you might forget this is a fish tale. When the Vikings found America, what where they looking for? And how did they manage to sustain themselves through the long ocean voyage? The answers are of course, cod. Kurlansky also has a few outlandish things to say about another favorite topic of his, the Basque, who it appears had been regularly fishing for Cod in Newfoundland long before Columbus found America. They were really good at keeping a secret, you see. Fortunately, there's a serious, or, at least more socially acceptable side, to Kurlansky's fish story. The fishing trade really is threatened. You can no longer practically walk on Atlantic cod. Even Icelanders who found their entire economy changing from one of sustenance to a first world service economy, during the two world wars, have a difficult time protecting their dwindling stock. If Aldous Huxley's grandfather, Thomas, asserted in the 19th century that cod would never become extinct, it was only because he could not imagine the rapid technological changes which would turn fishing into harvesting, and the classic practice of drying fish into freezing it, on board the fishing boats themselves. Good bye bacalao, hello fishsticks. It's a sad tale as ways of life dwindle and change, and even the very essentials of human existence that have lasted for thousands of years go unheard of by the post-industrial society. But are we really evolving into something better? Kurlansky peppers his narrative with quotes from notables throughout the ages and interesting, if often archaic, recipes.

The Handbook of Immunological Properties of Engineering Nanomaterials provides a comprehensive overview of current literature, methodologies, translational and regulatory considerations in the field of nanoimmunotoxicology. The main subject is immunological properties of engineered nanomaterials. The focus areas include interactions between engineered nanomaterials and red blood cells, platelets, endothelial cells, professional phagocytes, T cells, B cells, Dendritic cells, complement and coagulation systems, interaction with plasma proteins, nanoparticle sterility and sterilization. Each chapter includes a comprehensive literature review of a given area; describes protocols and resources available to support research in individual focus area; highlights challenges; and outlines unanswered questions and future directions. In addition, the handbook provides an overview and a practical guide to physicochemical characterization of engineered nanomaterials essential to conducting meaningful immunological studies of nanoparticles.

The handbook also reviews regulations related to immunotoxicity testing of materials prior to their translation into clinic. It is written by top experts in the field of nanomedicine, nanotechnology and translational bionanotechnology representing academia, government, industry, consulting organizations and regulatory agencies. The handbook is designed to serve as a textbook for students, a practical guide for research laboratories and an informational resource for scientific consultants, reviewers and policy makers. About the Author
Marina Dobrovolskaia is a Senior Scientist at the Nanotechnology Characterization Laboratory of SAIC-Frederick Inc., a contractor to the National Cancer Institute at Frederick. She directs preclinical in vitro and in vivo immunological characterization of engineered nanomaterials. Dr Dobrovolskaia is also responsible for the development, validation and performance qualification of in vitro and ex vivo assays to support preclinical characterization of nanoparticles, and for monitoring nanoparticle purity from biological contaminants such as bacteria, yeast, mold and endotoxin. Additionally, she leads structure activity relationship studies aimed at identifying the relationship between nanoparticle physicochemical properties and their interaction with macrophages, components of the blood coagulation cascade, and complement system. Prior to joining NCL she worked as a Research Scientist in a GLP laboratory at PPD Development, Inc. in Richmond, VA, where she was responsible for the design, development and validation of bioanalytical ligand-binding assays to support pharmacokinetic, toxicity and immunogenicity studies in a variety of drug development projects. She received her MS degree from the Kazan State University in Russia, her PhD from the N N Blokhin Cancer Research Center of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in Moscow, Russia, and completed two postdoctoral trainings in immunology at the National Cancer Institute in Frederick, MD and the University of Maryland in Baltimore, MD. Her areas of expertise include cell signaling, innate immunity, immunogenicity, endotoxin and analytical methodology.

Dr McNeil serves as the Director of the Nanotechnology Characterization Laboratory (NCL) for SAIC–Frederick and the National Cancer Institute at Frederick (NCI-Frederick), where he coordinates preclinical characterization of nanotech cancer therapeutics and diagnostics. At the NCL, Dr. McNeil leads a team responsible for testing of candidate nanotech drugs and diagnostics, evaluating safety and efficacy, and assisting with product development — from discovery–level, through scale-up and into clinical trials. NCL has assisted in characterization and evaluation of more than 200 nanotechnology products, several of which are now in human clinical trials. Dr McNeil is a member of several working groups on nanomedicine, environmental health and safety, and other nanotechnology issues. He is an invited speaker to numerous nanotechnology-related conferences and has several patents pending related to nanotechnology and biotechnology. He also directs SAIC-Frederick's Imaging and Nanotechnology Group (ING), and is a Vice President of SAIC-Frederick. Prior to establishing NCL, he served as Senior Scientist in the Nanotech Initiatives Division at SAIC where he transitioned basic nanotechnology research to government and commercial markets. He advises Industry and State and US Governments on the development of nanotechnology and is a member of several governmental and industrial working groups related to nanotechnology policy, standardization and commercialization. Dr McNeil's professional career includes tenure as an Army Officer, with tours as Chief of Biochemistry at Tripler Army Medical Center, and as a Combat Arms officer during the Gulf War. He received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Portland State University and his doctorate in cell biology from Oregon Health Sciences University.

Quite good for a first publication

After reading a few of the comments I thought I would buy this as I am always on the look out for new RPGs to add to my growing collection. I had never heard of Eschaton Media Inc or any of the authors and so wasn't overly sure of what to expect from first time game publishers, (we all know they can be a bit ropey at times). I did a bit of research and found some positive reviews of the larp events they hold in America so decided to pay for the international postage. All in all I was pleasantly surprised! The game clearly has been written by some people who love not only playing RPGs but also the Zombie setting. The flavor text has a point to make, the book itself is well laid out to avoid page flipping frenzy, and it leaves enough room for personalizing your campaign setting while giving reasonable subtext (good for more 'free form' players and more than likely due to the original concept being a Larp). Baring this in mind, this is not a 'Rules Nazi' game. There remain a few loop holes and (if your game group is anything like mine) they will be noticed and examined in depth. A good GM shouldn't have too much trouble using this book, and it is a good 'first time game' as it's an easy to understand setting/system. I look forward to hearing more from Eschaton Media Inc and wish them the best of luck. x London-Rolling

How well would YOU survive the zombie apocalypse?

So for the sake of full disclosure, I am one of the folks who goes out and plays in the live-action roleplay version of Dystopia Rising and its because of that experience that I found the world of Dystopia and eventually this awesome book. That being said, this book can and should be taken at its own merit as a welcome addition to the tabletop scene. Not only is it well-written, but provides a rounded and fleshed out world in which to explore your own personal vision of the zombie apocalypse. As a veteran GM of tabletop and live-action games, I was pleased to see that the mechanics are open-ended enough that players of all experience levels could find their way into the game system without being bogged down with too many rules. Kudos especially on including a system for vehicle combat as well as a well developed equipment section that is very genre appropriate for zombie killing. The artwork is also one of the highlights of the book - from the logos for each of the strains and religions to the zombie artwork, the look of the book pays homage to the genre its working with.

I'd suggest this book to anyone interested in a good roleplaying adventure - this setting is great for one-shot nights with friends or long term campaigns. I look forward to more content from Eschaton in the future!

Gritty and Amazing...from a seasoned GM

So as most GM's i got my feet wet in the RPG world with D and D ...among other fantasy RPG's. However overtime my needs evolved into something more...something darker something more gritty and i found just that. Ive always been a fan of the zombie genre ...as a result i was kinda looking for something in the nerve of post-apoc / zombie outbreak, and i FOUND IT 10 FOLD!...I wasnt quite sure how to feel when i first got it....ive had my heart broken by many RPG books in the past promising a true post=apoc feel...well let me tell you that Dystopia Rising didn't disappoint at all.

The background and world that was created is lush and dark...the religions in game are inventive and interesting. The world that is contained in these pages is worth a look at and for ANYONE that is a fan of the zombie genre and RPG scene. Do yourself a favor and check this book out. My friends and i have a table top game set up and the rule book has been a god send.
