It was a pretty good book.

I liked this book because it was interesting. One thing the author did well was he made the words not too small and not too big. My favorite part was when Lebron went from poor to rich. My favorite character was Lebron because he liked football in his school. I would recommend this book because it was interesting.

Engineering for racers

"Engineer to Win " by Carroll Smith is the third book in his series of hands on guides to racing. Anyone who has read his earlier books, "Tune to Win" and "Prepare to Win" has probably already ordered this book. Those out there haven't been introduced to Carroll Smith are in for a very enjoyable experience. All to often engineering books written by engineering professors for engineers are technically correct but drier than a popcorn fart. Smith is just the opposite. His sense of humor and down to earth writing style are a welcome relief to readers used to struggling to get through technical manuals. He teaches you basic engineering principles in easy to understand terms for the layman. This volume contains an excellent crash course (excuse the pun) in metalurgy. While he has been there and done that and doesn't B.S. you, he manages to not come off like a know-it-all. In fact, when he's not an expert on the subject, he'll tell you so and send you elsewhere for the information. For example on composites he'll send you to an experimental aircraft source because that's where the cutting edge of that technology lies. I give this book, my highest rating and recomend it to racers, fans, and anyone who ever wanted to get in to racing. Although you may want to start with one of his earlier books first, the wealth of information contained, and the manner in which it's presented in this series is enough to single handedly move you from the grandstands to the pits. Just Get the Book. It is that good! Period.

I have read many books pertaining to chassis design, construction techniques, automotive materials selection, suspension design, engine design, engine components and construction, aerodynamics, downforce, sheetmetal fabrication, welding, machining, car tuning, etc. Few I have read more than twice. This is one of those few books. But why?
Carroll Smith presents the information logically, clearly and with the correct amount of depth so that you may make cognizent decisions. He is able to write in such a way that it reads easily...as though you have recorded your conversation as he answers your many questions. It is not dull, engineering jargon but interesting, factual data presented well. It would be nice if all subjects were as well documented and presented. A thanks to Mr. Smith for sharing the information. It must have taken many years (and lessons) to gather.
The pictures are done well, the graphs and tables present the information clearly and adequately backup his statements. If you read the book and absorb all that is presented for you, you will be a much wiser individual for the experience. You will be a better racecar builder AND a better driver as you will understand what is happening as you navigate the course.
I would recommend not only this book but the entire "to WIN" series as they all share these traits.

Not really a book on engineering

Smith's books have become bibles for many racers. This one has very good sections dealing with detail aspects of race car systems although it felt like something was missing in the area of suspensions. But suspensions require their own book so that is probably unavoidable.

Smith spent nearly the first third of the book explaining the history, refining, and structure of steel. Interesting stuff but what he was getting to was why ferrous metals fail, and not all of the information in the first third of the book was required for that. And this is a metals book, he had little experience with composites and there is really no useful information about them in the book.

All of his information on threaded fasteners is in his fastener book (which is very good) so reducing that would have made more space for info about race car systems.

I was surprised to see that much of his info about welding was either outdated or incorrect according to the American Welding Society.

So, don't expect too much from this one and check critical information with other sources.

Short entries on major religious movements

There are so many "new" religions out there, though oftentimes the new religions spout the same old philosophy. This "Pocket Guide" concentrates on 4-5 pages of reviewing some of the American groups that have proliferated the scene in the past two centuries. From the old standbys such as JWs and Mormons to newer groups such as Hare Krishnas and UFO cults, the author concentrates on the real basic information of each group. Probably the most valuable part of this book is the "Recent Development" sections, telling the readers what's happened in recent years. If you're looking for in depth analysis, though, then I would say that this is not the book. Or if you have little to no background knowledge on the movement, this too probably would not be my first choice. But if you're looking for a general summary of a group, wanting to learn about the founders, major ideas of its teaching, and a little history behind it, this is probably not a bad reference to keep in the library. I did find it a little too generic in some instances, such as the Worldwide Church of God entry, which really didn't concentrate very much on the past decade but rather the previous history. For an up-to-date source, there are probably better places to go. But again, use it for what you will, a "pocket guide" and it very well is worth the $10 cost.

A trustworthy guide into a strange new world

Nigel Scotland's recent book shows that spirituality is far from being extinguished by today's secular agenda. I now have a much better understanding why New Religious Movements (NRMs) are so popular whilst mainstream religion is on the decline. The author provides concise bullet points and impartial insights into each NRM - clearly expressing "what makes them tick". I found the writing style to be respectful and non-condemnatory, indeed each NRM feels to be speaking for itself. The preface clearly sets out the context of NRMs and there's a quick reference in the form of a Glossary at the end. The cover picture certainly got my attention and I'm hoping for a few more illustrations in the next edition.

This book is fantastically done. Pictures are like you are there really great really nice.

Content goes wide but not deep

This book offers a very broad overview of what Economic Geography is. The organization of the book isn't very logical. The author jumps from topic to topic without connecting ideas. Many thoughts are incomplete and randomly pieced together to form a chapter. Would not recommend to someone who is trying to understand the basics of economic geography.

It's Not Just The Hunger Games

For those of you who've been saying "Oh, it's just another Hunger Games. Big whoop," you need to shut your mouths right now before the rest of your brain falls out. This is not The Hunger Games. Aside from the fact that it includes a televised event of children fighting each other in a dystopian universe (which is not an idea unique to The Hunger Games originally anyway), these two books really don't have that much in common.

One of my personal favorite premises in this book is the fact that anyone who is caught committing a crime become a Belligerent and lives out the rest of his or her life a either a servant, a labor worker, an entertainer, or a modern day gladiator. Of course, committing a crime isn't nearly the same thing as getting caught committing a crime, but talk about a motivator to keep the public in line! Do something illegal and you get a band strapped around your wrist that will inject a sedative into your bloodstream the moment you try to resist.

Not only does becoming a Belligerent mean that you practically forfeit all control over your own life, but you have to give it to someone else. You are now property of an Owner that has every power to make you do whatever they want. That's where Ryan ends up after he tries to steal the car of a wealthy Owner who's determined to have his team win the Vicara games for reasons that are never fully clear to us. All we know is that Shifter, the man that's now calling the shots of his life, saw something in Ryan that he needed and decided to take it.

Shifter's team is probably the best thing about Belligerent. Meeting them way by far my favorite part of the novel, and they are always the easiest characters for me to identify. They're all so unique and obviously became Belligerents in different manners, yet their differences are probably the very reason they work so well together. They all need each other in some way, and I love the family dynamic that B.N. Mauldin creates with them.

My one criticism for this book lies with the ending. Cliffhangers, man. Cliffhangers. Belligerent is obviously supposed to be part of a series, but what a place to end! Do you think you could have left me with even more to wonder about?

Good Book

Belligerent is a really good book, I'm glad I stumbled onto it. Once I got started I just chewed through it. I liked the setting and characters, I found myself caring about them pretty quickly. Harder to pull off given the number of characters. Of course as many good books do, it got me thinking of campaigns and character ideas. I could have read a good bit more about these Belligerents and I look forward to the next book. Strangely my only issue was with calling people belligerents, it's a good word, but for some reason it rubbed me the wrong way for the protagonists. Of course if that's the worst I have to say, how bad is it.

This is entirely an excellent read :) There were some parts that felt a little awkward to read, but I feel like it's comparable to the pilot episode of a show you know you're gonna love. Sure, sometimes background info is a little jumbled, but it sets the scene for a beautiful story in a vibrant fantasy world. Full of vibrant and diverse characters, as well as that "kid drama/adult drama" combo we've come to love in so many excellent "New Adult" stories
