Great book for beginners

I am trying to learn a bit about FPGA's in my limited spare time, and while I haven't finished this book yet, my impression is that this is probably the best introduction that I will find. It is concise and yet accessible, and slim rather than overwhelming in volume. Instead of making you walk through vendor-specific setup wizards that implement some CPU analog on your FPGA with the click of a button, this book begins with the most fundamental concepts, rationales, syntax rules, and code examples of FPGA programming in Verilog, building from there. Hindsight is always 20/20, and the author's express purpose was to utilize his learning experience to write the kind of introductory book that he wished he had had 20 years ago when he started out as a novice. I congratulate him to this approach.

Hard to pin down, exactly

I know exactly who this book is for (me, among others, about 15 years ago), but I'm still not sure how to describe it. Thar reader is fluent enough with normal programming languages that bits of syntax won't be a problem - making it that much easier to address the problematic parallelism implicit in HDLs. That reader also has a fair understanding about the bits & bobs of logic design: gates, RAMs, registers, and the like, but maybe never took the second course in logic design.

This book, a companion to Readler's "VHDL by example," gives the novice a running start at the other major hardware design language. People on both sides can get pretty het up about which is The One, often along geographic lines (Europe vs. US, East coast vs. West coast). The fact is, though, that you don't often get to pick. Your employer, your work group or client, the tools and libraries available to you will often make the choice for you. So, it's best to know both, and Readler's books treat them with a reasonably even hand.

In the unlikely event that you're free to choose, it's a matter of taste. I certainly have my preferences, but they don't matter much. Verilog reminds a programmer of C - I mean, K&R C, from way back, with all the good and bad that implies. Include files, scopeless macro definition, and uninformative module (or function) prototypes will all look familiar. VHDL, on the other hand, derives consciously from Ada, with all the good and bad that implies. That includes packages (which no one uses), operator overloads (which no one thinks they use, but do), and draconian type checking - something that will cost you a lot of time, but very likely save you even more.

Like its VHDL twin, this gives only the basics, i.e. what you'll use for about 97% of your HDL coding. Like the other, it introduces test benches - just as well, and just as badly. On the "well" side, it shows the basic structure of a test driver, clock generator, test stimulus and housekeeping. On the "badly" side, it provides inputs but never checks outputs. In industry, your logic might be subjected to nightly regression tests, where a robot controller expects your tests to verify the outputs and give a go/nogo output in machine-readable form. These days, a big logic design includes billions or tens of billions of transistors. Believe me, you won't do eyeball checks of waveforms on each input and output. Saying "I checked the output and it looked good" simply is not an answer.

And, I have to raise a personal peeve about every HDL book in the world, this included. There are lots of things you can put in the synthesizable payload logic: memories, boolean goodies, registers, and simple arithmetic. There are lots of things you can't: print statements, mod and div operators, and lots more. The synthesizable can go into your FPGA or anywhere; the un-synthesizable can exist only in your simulation environment. You need both, but you also need to draw a thick black line between the two, and never even think about the simulation-only features when you code your payload logic. No book I've seen (this included) emphasizes that distinction, and it's a huge barrier for many students. That said, this book is no worse than any other I know.

So, it's basic. It's very basic. Any competent instructor would get you way past this level in a hurry. But many people, my niece included, don't have instructors, competent or otherwise. If you're lifting yourself by your own bootstraps into the esoterica of HDL logic design, this is the best Verilog book I know. You'll need a lot more to gain strength as a logic designer, but everyone has to start somewhere. Bon voyage!

Excellent Started Book

This was a great starter book for learning Verilog in the context of FPGA design. I would definitely recommend it for anyone looking to pick up the Verilog language. It takes you from language through simulation. It is not a comprehensive reference, but a nice introductory tutorial.

This book presents these unique mystical insights into the prayer lives of many saints taken from Adrienne’s direct visions of them in prayer. Among the long list of saints in this book are St. John the Apostle, St. Augustine, St. Francis, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, St. John Bosco, St. Bernadette, St. Dominic, St. Edith Stein and many, many more.

About the Author
Adrienne von Speyr (1902-1967) was a Swiss medical doctor, convert to Catholicism, a mystic, wife and author of over 60 books on spirituality and theology. She collaborated closely with the renowned theologian Hans Urs Von Balthasar, her confessor for 27 years, and they co-founded the Community of Saint John. Her numerous writings, published by Ignatius Press, are recognized by leading theologians and writers as a major contribution to the mystical and spiritual writings of the Church. Among her most important works are Book of All Saints, Confession, The World of Prayer, Handmaid of the Lord, and The Passion from Within.

Hans Urs von Balthasar (1905-88), a Swiss theologian and priest, is considered by many the most important Catholic theologian of the twentieth century. Incredibly prolific and diverse, he wrote over one hundred books and many hundreds of articles. A favorite theologian and spiritual writer of Pope Francis, as well as the two previous Popes, he was called the most cultured man of our time by Henri de Lubac, and Karl Rahner described his achievements as really breathtaking.

Interesting and useful for very particular purposes

This book provides a compendium of the visions and communications that Adrienne von Speyr received concerning the prayer habits of a sundry group of people-- despite the title, not all of whom would be considered by most Catholics to be saints. Adrienne was a well respected mystic and writer of the mid twentieth century, and she created this work cooperatively with her likewise respected confessor Fr. Hans Balthasar.

Of all Ms. Speyr's works, this is perhaps one of the easiest to read. The stories of the people here are told in a direct and straightforward manner with helpful footnoting by the translator where it is needed. Fr. Balthasar asks her readership to suspend their skepticism and appreciate Ms. Speyr's words as objective data on the actual habits of men and women like St. Bridget, St. Francis, and even Shakespeare (!); nevertheless, this can prove difficult as her own opinions seem to be incorporated in many of the records. She does not simply review prayer behaviors, but frequently judges the motives and relative success or failure of the saints in a manner that seems largely dependent on her own social understanding (rather than simply on Catholic Orthodoxy). This may prove problematic for some readers, particularly those well-versed in the historical and cultural backgrounds of the figures she describes.

However, if your need is to be inspired to pray, and to connect with the prayers of historical Catholics (or speculated Catholics) this book may serve you well. It may also be useful for scholars who are interested in the mid-century attitudes toward the saints and mystical Catholic ways of re-interpreting them.

This work came into being over the course of several years, as new portraits were constantly added on occasion or at my own request. In the beginning, Adrienne was shown individual saints during times when she was not at all thinking of these particular people. For the most part, they were shown in their general disposition and, then, often in prayer that was particularly characteristic of them. Adrienne was each time able to reproduce their disposition when we recorded the dicta-tion, and the words they spoke in prayer were given to her again during the dictation. Once the dictation was over, she would most often completely forget what she had seen and heard, as always was the case when Adrienne had "settled" something in obedience and put herself at the disposal of a new task. In the first period, she was also often given the vision of a saint during the night while she was at prayer, and she would report to me the next day that she had seen this or that saint, asking whether she could tell me about him or her. Frequently, she would be shown the essence of the person she saw without know-ing exactly what the person's name was. Once she said, "Today I have seen Gregory." "Which one?" I asked. She confessed that she did not know there was more than one; she had no idea which person it was with whom she had interacted. I asked her then to begin, and after just a few sentences it became clear to me that it could have been none other than Gregory Nazianzen, as the section in this book will confirm. Later came Gregory the Great and Gregory of Nyssa to join him. Another time she said to me, "Today I received Catherine", and to my question, "Which Catherine?" she could only say, "Not the one from Siena; I know her." With the description, I guessed that it must have been Catherine of Genoa, whose life I myself had never read; a subsequent comparison with her biography and especially a comparison of the prayer with the account of the visions Adrienne had received gave me the certainty that it could have been no one else.
Later, the choice of the saints that were to be described was increasingly left to me. At first, I would jot down names for myself on a scrap of paper, and it might happen that, when I placed the paper before Adrienne, she would immediately say, "I can do this one." Another name she might take with her into her nightly prayer and then describe him to me on the following day. Later, I was able to request from her whatever saint or special personality I wished: a brief prayer would transpose her to the "place" of vision, she would close her eyes, look for a moment in the Spirit on what was shown her with intensity and inner excitement, and then the description would begin, slowly at first, in very clearly stamped words, and then more quickly, without the slightest hesitation, making new judgments with every sentence. Those who were still alive, and whose fate still lay in their free decision, were not shown, or (as, for example, with Therese Neumann) only in very brief glimpses. The definitive text on the little "Rest" as well as on John XXIII, were written only after their deaths.
Adrienne had either no knowledge or just a glimmer of an idea about the majority of the personalities whose names I presented to her. Quite often the outcome of her description took me completely by surprise; I had expected something altogether different. I also presented her with names that were for me nothing more than names; I got some of them from a list of people who had received the stigmata, above all, in order to see what sort of piety or attitude in each case lay behind the phenomenon; a few names were taken from the book by P. Herbert Thurston, behind whose purely psychological and physiological descriptions the properly religious and Christian destinies and decisions remained hopelessly hidden and unrecognizable. What might the truth be, one wants to ask, about a Maria Castreca or the enigmatic Maria de la Visitación? In most cases, I did not verify the answers with documents that may finally have come to my attention; but the things that were shown, which were always extremely precise and bore a unique personal quality, already arranged the individual and disconnected traits into an internally plausible portrait.
It is important for the reader to bear in mind that the only thing intended to be shown here is the particular person's prayer and attitude toward prayer in relation to God. This attitude can in some cases be considerably different from the person's other achievements in the world and also for the Church (as, for example, the surprising and indeed shocking portrait drawn of Thomas Aquinas shows). The degree of integration between inner life and external work can vary quite significantly.
Particularly in the earlier periods of this work, Adrienne possessed an altogether extraordinary need for purity and transparency. Each time, she would ask, almost with anxiety, whether she was in fact "clean enough", whether I was able to see perfectly through her soul. She preferred to go to confession every time before she under-took this work, desirous as she was to be in every case in a perfect state of confession. In this regard, she dictated to me the following sentences:
As long as a person lives in this world, he always clings in some sense to the things that belong to him. In confession, by contrast, a person must set the things that belong to him free; he must let the world go; he must bring forth everything and hand it over to the Church. He must become like a child. Then a person can allow everything God wishes to pass through him. Everything the Spirit says. But in confession a person gathers together all his sins, 'as God sees them'. He becomes dispossessed of his own judgment over himself in order to leave judgment to God alone. Only when a person leaves judgment to God alone can he, when he is shown a saint, say how it is that the Holy Spirit sees him. The Holy Spirit's judgment often turns out to be different from what the saint himself expects. For this reason, it can happen that something is shown of which the saint and those around him were scarcely aware; the Spirit underscores certain things that he takes to be important in the saint's soul, whether they be positive or negative.
The state of confession, in which Adrienne sought to remain, means: pure openness and readiness, the whole of the soul being nothing more than a photographic plate, able to take up and reproduce anything that is given to it, just as it is given. If this purity were not there, according to Adrienne, it would not be possible to see "how much of what was given belonged to the saint himself and how much belonged to me. In fact, it would disproportionately increase precisely what I had kept of my own, hidden in myself, in the transmission of what came from the other, and would thus make the objectivity of the portrait impossible." The more absolute the obedience demanded was (and here it was truly demanded in an absolute sense), the greater would be the guilt if some-one wanted to keep something hidden. It is clear, however, that such an "experiment" could be performed only with a soul that had been completely purified. The complete self-effacement that was demanded has of course nothing in common with Buddhism and Zen; it is a pure work of Christian love; it is the highest possible approximation to the Church's attitude as the Bride of Christ, in whose bosom and spirit all the saints and those who pray find their shelter. It is the attitude of the soul that has been known, since Origen's time, as the anima ecclesiastica, the ecclesial soul, it is the perfection of the Ignatian sentire cum Ecclesia.
Adrienne takes the prayers of the saints and other believers into her soul through a perfect reenactment of them. That is why she occasionally shows some awkwardness when she has to reproduce an imperfect prayer: she herself would have preferred to pray a different way. Or, if the prayer contains traces of vanity (as, for example, in Gregory Nazianzen), she feels afterward somewhat stained. On the other hand, she feels personally enriched by all the things in the prayers that are good. She receives all of this with her own "organ of prayer". If she herself had not prayed so much, she would not have been able to transmit any prayers, and if she did not herself have some experience of everything that appears in all these prayers, she would also not have been able to reproduce them. Nevertheless, she was not permitted to be anything but an instrument in the moment of transmission. More-over, she was not able to carry through these transmissions in the presence of anyone but her confessor, because the whole was a work of obedience.' (The one attempt I made to request something of this sort in the presence of a third person (a young Jesuit priest, who was a friend of ours, was present) was such a torture to Adrienne that I immediately perceived the falseness of the endeavor and never repeated it.

The Christian in the parish, in Christianity, is always the first Christian, always the ancient believer, who is always ready, always subject to public confession, to a common and, as it were, mutual confession.])
If, on Adrienne's part, it is a work of obedience, then on the side of the saints it was a work of humility. Of a heavenly humility that does not shy from displaying itself before the earthly Church in an unshielded attitude of confession. If Peguy considers public confession to be an indispensable principle of the earthly Church, how much more valid-ity it holds for the heavenly Church, where nothing private exists any-more! The examples will show that nothing happens outside of love and discretion, for the sake of mere curiosity, and that everything that is shown is an aid in some sense to Christianity on earth.
The various series came to be at different times. In the first series, one finds sections included that occurred at a later date. The series dealing with the threefold attitude and the series with the recited prayers came into existence within the space of a relatively brief period of time. When Adrienne had finished her description, I was given the freedom to ask questions in order to fill in some blanks. These questions, or the answers to them, can be recognized in the text because they are preceded by a line space. It is significant that Adrienne, who was doubtless in a form of ecstasy, nevertheless heard the voice of her confessor by virtue of her obedience, understood his questions, and was able to answer them in view of what she saw.
The choice of the saints' portraits remains of course arbitrary; there could have been many more such portraits to be had. Regarding the wording of the dictation, very little has been changed; nothing at all has been changed in terms of the meaning, though the sentence structure was here and there tightened; French words (Adrienne's native language was French, and she was not always able to find immediately the fitting word in German) were often left untranslated. A bit more variety was brought to her somewhat poor vocabulary through the occasional use of synonyms.
In judging these portraits, the reader ought to focus his attention on the center of the things said rather than getting caught up in the mar-gins or in trivial matters. Certain details might be expressed in a one-sided manner, perhaps even badly characterized. But no one is going to deny that Michelangelo is able to draw well just because in one of his drawings there happens to be a "stray" line. In reading, one reads the Spirit in the illuminated background, not in the letter. No one who reads the following pages can fail to see the power of the things said, whose intellectual differentiation and characterization presuppose a wholly uncommon natural intelligence and a just as uncommon supernatural discernment of spirits. It should be clear, however, that this work is given to the modern, prayer-weary Church in order to awaken in her an astonishment over the riches of the "world of prayer" and a new joy in praying.

Shows prayer to be different for all of us

Showing that there is not just one way to pray and pray is not "easy" for anyone. It does show that the saints are like all believers in all things except for there perseverance and dedication to vocation. They have individual talents that God gives and God uses. Helps bring the devout life to everyday living. It is like the sacraments, God transforming the ordinary into the sacred. It's not about being unworthy, rather embracing humility.

About the Author
Jacques Sandulescu (1928–2010) was born in Romania and was arrested by soldiers of the occupying Soviet Red Army in January 1945, at age sixteen, because he looked big and strong enough to work. After his escape from Russia, he made his way to the New World, where he was a pro heavyweight fighter, interpreter in the US Army and the UN, jazz bar owner, actor (you saw him say "Is that your purse?" in "Trading Places," "Liberty!" in "Moscow on the Hudson," and "What the hell is ANSKY?" in a memorable New York Yankees commercial), and author. More than 50 years after his escape, Jacques returned to the Donbas region where he'd been a prisoner, a story told in the epilogue of this book.

the most exciting, unreal, inspiring story of survival and escape I have ever read

When I first encountered Jacques Sandulescu, I was a pasty college kid whose idea of exertion involved a highlighter and a textbook. Jacques was twice my age, a giant, rock hard, with hands that swallowed pens whole. Romania was deep in his past, as was his career as a professional boxer; in l968, when we met, he was a Greenwich Village bar owner.

Like Big Daddy Lipscomb --- the legendary giant of a football player who used to help opponents up "so the children won't think Big Daddy's mean" --- Jacques was a calming force in every room he entered. You couldn't imagine trouble erupting with him around; he was that big and strong. And, at the same time, peaceful --- he had the kind of calm only people who have passed through fire seem to know.

It wasn't until I read his book that I understood the horror Jacques survived.

"I was arrested in Brasov on my way to school," his book begins. And right there your stomach sinks. Because you know what's coming: a terrible story, told in unadorned prose.

Well, brace yourself, you're about to be devastated.

As "Donbas" opens, Jacques is 16 years old, 6 feet 2 inches tall, 180 pounds. He's the youngest person in the box car filled with Romanians that the Russians are shipping east in January of 1945. But his youth vanishes fast when he watches guards execute some would-be escapees. On one hand, he envies their death: "no more cold, misery, hunger." On the other, he wants to live. Which means he'll have to escape.

This is a book about noticing everything, paying sharp attention, looking for an opening. His first conclusion: Don't try to escape in winter, don't think you can get out of Russia without knowing Russian.

But after a few days of working in the coal mines of Donbas (now considered part of the Ukraine), his thoughts turn from escape to survival. The work is wet and cold. A cave-in could come at any time. Exhaustion, exposure, hunger --- death comes in many forms here.

I have never read an account of work in a mine that made me so claustrophobic. I found myself reading faster, as if getting to the end of a particularly horrible shift would provide some relief. But it didn't --- above ground, there were sadistic guards and icy winds. "Many prisoners died," Jacques reports matter-of-factly. "Over half the camp. Four hundred and fifty weak and sick weren't suffering any more."

Jacques is comparatively well off. He is strong and uncomplaining, a good worker. He gets privileges --- when he goes to nearby homes for dinner, it's a delight to read as he eats and eats and eats. But he's never fooled; there's always a power-mad guard around the corner. And one does beat him so badly he almost dies. Which makes it all the more satisfying when, with the permission of a senior officer, Jacques stomps that sadist mercilessly. "It was a good feeling while it lasted," he says. I think even a pacifist would agree.

After two and a half years, his luck runs out. Jacques is trapped in a cave-in and rescued only by a friend's heroic efforts. He fears his legs will be amputated. It's winter, but so what --- he must escape. His legs are running with pus, he is a mass of sores, but he slips onto a train, hides in an open coal car and begins the slow, freezing ride to the West.

Books like this have a built-in handicap --- we know the author survived. Only the best of the breed make us forget that there's a happy ending. And this is the best; reading these pages, you will feel cold and hungry, raging with fever, wet and dispirited. But mostly, you will feel Jacques Sandulescu's spirit, his unyielding insistence on life, life in free air, life at all costs. After you put his book down, you will, literally, take a deep breath.

What a Story!

I grew up during the Cold War. In our history classes we learned about the Jewish Holocaust but we were never told about Stalins Holocaust and his practice of enslaving anyone & everyone for hard labor. Millions died in the Gulags & mines. This story is about one young boys determination to escape and how through hard work & the kindness of others he is finally able to escape. His story is one of guts & love. I recommend this to anyone who wants a birds eye view of what Stalin brought upon his own people. Sad & inspiring at the same time.
