He also traces their later emigration and the radical transformation of this conservative tribal-religious group into a modern, politically mobilized, secular nation under Soviet rule. Stalin's genocidal deportation of the Crimean Tatars in 1944 to Uzbekistan and their almost messianic return to their cherished 'Green Isle' in the 1990s are examined in detail, while the author's archival investigations are bolstered by his field research among the Crimean Tatar exiles in Uzbekistan and in their samozakhvat (self-seized) squatter camps and settlements in the Crimea.

Beautifully written history of this small Muslim-Mongol ethnic group's struggle for homeland and survival.

The Muslim Crimean Tatars, the last remnants of the Medieval Mongol invasions of Europe, have been making headlines ever since the Russian conquest of the Crimea in the spring of 2014. But its difficult find to find information on this pitiful remnant of a once mighty nation that is battling the Russians in their native land. This book is a beautifully written history of the Crimean Tatars, from the time of their brutal conquest in the 1700s by Catherine the Great to their more recent conquest by Putin. Williams begins by recreating the lost world of the fascinating Crimean Tatars that was lost in the Russian Imperial conquest. He brings to life a rich Islamic culture that fell to pieces when the Russians ethnically cleansed this ancient race. But the worst was to come under the Soviets when Stalin genocidally cleansed the Crimean Tatars to the deserts of Soviet Uzbekistan. Williams masterfully recreates the Crimean Tatars struggle to survive in this inhospitable land and return to their ancestral homeland on the Black Sea. Most hearteningly, Williams uses Russian sources and lived with the Tatars in their places of Stalin-imposed exile in Uzbekistan and in their post-Soviet repatriation settlements in the Crimea (where they are clashing with the local Russians who moved into their land during their exile) to collect their moving story. It is a powerful story of the survival of a small nation, and imperial conquest on the edge of Europe that will be of interest to anyone who is interested in genocide, Russian, Muslim and Mongol history

Actually this is a very good book for learning

I mostly agree with the positive reviews of the 3rd edition of Grimmett & Stirzaker's *Probability and Random Processes.* I wanted to address the criticism by the previous reviewer and add some detail regarding the 3rd edition (I suspect that the prior reviews might be based on the 1st 2 editions of the book).
(1) The prior reviewer might have a point in that this book may not have as many exercises and examples that are worked out to be helpful to the learner. However, this is because there is a companion book -- *One Thousand Exercises in Probability* (2nd ed.) -- that is designed to provide those examples and exercises. That book contains the answers/solutions to each and every exercise posed in that book. That book also closely follows the topics of this book. Together, those 2 books by Grimmett & Stirzaker should meet all of the requirements for self-studiers of probability theory. [Really, the 2 books should be seen as a set.]
(2) The 3rd edition of this book (along with exercises/answer book) cover a wide range of topics from probability starting from basics and going up to applications like queueing, Monte Carlo & Markov Chain Monte Carlo, Ito's Lemma & financial option valuation, etc. In short, this set of books should enable the sufficiently motivated to go from basic probability to a point where they can approach useful problems in applied probability (rather than toy problems offered by other books which, by the way, don't usually give the answers).
(3) Stirzaker (Oxford) has one of the best approaches to thinking about probability that I have ever come across. It is well worth it to expose oneself to his viewpoint.

A steep learning experience

This is the best and the hardest book on probability I have ever seen. It is extremely dense and rigorous so it requires the reader to think hard. It has plenty of examples which are often so complex to present sub topics on their own.

This is not a book for people who need only basics.

Great book for advanced students in probability

As many reviewers have pointed out, this book may be too advanced for a beginner student, but it is truly the best for a graduate student or anyone else with solid background in Mathematics and some knowledge of Probability. When I took the course based on this book I already covered Advanced Calculus (Rudin) and college-level Probability and Statistics (DeGroot), and I just loved this book. Ten years later I still use it; just a few weeks ago I needed to familiarize myself with Brownian bridges and it took me only 10 minutes with the book to get all I need to know - the concepts, the formulas, the applications - to the extent I could explain it to my teammates.
I wouldn't recommend this book as the introduction to probability, but for a serious student of mathematics this is a great book to further the understanding of probability and prepare for advanced studies in Stochastic Calculus.

Grow in Spiritual Awareness

Being connected to God is the main message of this lovely book. The author is certainly a gifted clairvoyant medium, as she saw visions and received messages as a child. She shares her life story of embracing her gift, and sharing it with others to bring healing and joy into their lives. At the same time, she encourages the reader to develop intuition, and a personal relationship with God. She encourages us to remember we can receive our own messages and inspirations, with active listening, spiritual awareness and practice. She shares some practices that have worked for her. I have already started the "ten before ten," an easy method to express gratitude, twice a day. And, what really makes this book enjoyable is the author's own joy and sense of humor!

This book is well written with simple directions and practices for anyone to use. Betsy guides you on how to pray and connect with a higher spirit through easy exercises, pray your specific needs using the psalms and to trust that God will provide because He can. A must read!

As a ceramic artist and educator who has occasion to work with those in the architecture and design fields, this book is highly effective as both a primer to new technologies and as a teaching tool. The respective approach to the complexities of the ceramic medium is key to provide accurate information of an ancient material used in a quickly changing world of technological applications. The authors have, themselves, "gotten their hands dirty" through using ceramics in their own research as well as in the classroom and this shows in the clear and concise overview of the exciting role ceramics plays in contemporary architecture and interior design.

Doctor Rosengarten Advises Use of Tarot in Counseling

I purchased this book and somehow had overlooked the fact that Ph.D was behind his name. I was so surprised to find a Tarot book that delves so deeply into the many uses of Tarot and that a psychologist would recommend them!!
One of the most impressive comments I must make regarding this book is how easy it was to read. I have found in the past, that when one reads a book by a doctor, that they tend to use "big" words to prove they are educated enough to hold a degree.
Dr. Rosengarten, however, does not.
Each card is explained in full details but not so much as a card, but as a possibility for growth and needs. But if you are a professional reader and want to truly be able to go beyond predictive tarot readings, I suggest this book as your first purchase.

Complex and rewarding......

TAROT AND PSYCHOLOGY: Spectrums of Possibility, by Arthur Rosengarten, is a complex but well-written book. Rosengarten is a Jungian psychologist who has written a book primarily for fellow clinicians. However, Tarot readers of any persuasion will probably find the book informative and interesting.
Rosengarten suggests psychoanalysis is based more on art than science, and as an art form Tarot can play a role. He says his method involving the use of Tarot cards is both effective and pragmatic. In his own practice, he has found Tarot can play a role in facilitating quality ananysis within time constraints (managed care). To support his claims of the effectiveness of his methods, he presents the results of some empirical work he conducted using Tarot with a purposive sample of adults in domestic violence treatment programs. He says his work can be replicated and is thus subject to empirical review.
Either Rosengarten's writing is incredibly clear, or I was in the right place at the right time, or both, but based on my reading of this book, I think I may finally understand what Jung meant by synchronicity. Rosengarten suggests each of the Tarot cards has a spectrum of meanings and that each of these meanings is augmented when viewed in conjunction with other cards (and their meanings) in a particular spread. The synchronic view contrasts with a linear interpretation of the Major Arcana of the Tarot cards which some see as representative of the stages of personality development or journey of the soul.
As nearly as I can tell, Rosengarten is suggesting that when one engages in a Tarot reading, a "higher power" takes over and a path to enlightment is opened. Having experienced the Transcendent I have to agree with him. However, whether your view is diachronic or synchronic I think you will find Rosengarten's book intriguing.

This book is a wonderful support document for the power of Tarot as a counseling tool. Mr. Rosengarten writes in a very clear and casual style which makes complex concepts understandable to the lay person. This book is a valuable companion to the core books which have been in my library since my studies began (many of them referenced by Mr. Rosengarten). Somewhat technical at times, the author's "every-day" references and context clarify within the body of the work, making frequent trips to a dictionary unnecessary. There were a few sections that were theoretically over my head, but their content was not necessary to follow these document to it's logical conclusion. Bravo!

very nice as one of the few books to give a ...

very nice as one of the few books to give a more academic treatment and overarching look at the great variety of meditation practices within Buddhisms around the world. Sometimes it seems to border on an academic book that wants to be a more popular book or vice versa. I felt there was some lack in consistency in the voice and intended audience of the book, thus keeping it from 5 stars. There are also some questionable points and generalizations, but that is very forgivable in a book that tries to cover so much ground. A very solid addition to an area which is not treated enough with an academic lens ... but, fyi, if you are simply looking to start a meditation practice, probably not the right book for you.
