Humorous Adventures at Saint Ursula's School.

Just Patty is a compilation of the adventures of Patty Wyatt and her best friends Connie Wilder and Priscilla. The book's publication date is 1911.
The young ladies are in their Senior year at St. Ursula's boarding school. The novel opens with the three discovering that they will not be roommates. Each girl has been assigned a new and generally impossible roommate.
The Latin Instructor, Miss Lord, has convinced the Principal, Mrs Trent, to separate the three mischievous friends. The girls plead to be re-united and returned to their former rooms in the West Wing (Paradise Alley). How they convince the Dowager to return them to Paradise Alley is ingenious and amusing.
The girls' adventures continue from exposing a dubious fictitous romance created by the worldly Mae Mertelle to facilitating the romance of gymnasium teacher Miss Jellings and Mr Gilroy with a little judicious Gypsy fortune telling.
It is amusing to read how the worth of a supposed Suitor is judged by his gifting a volume of Marie Correlli's Works. The girls' grousing on being required to attend Friday afternoon lectures on Woman's Rights is interesting when you realise that this book was published prior to the enactment of the 19th Amendment. These young women are aware of unions, strikes and the eight hour day. There is even a schoolgirl foray into the popular belief of spiritualism. Ghost parties and seances give rise to ectoplasmic mischief.
This is a book of clever funny stories of young women at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Jean Webster Amazes

Maybe this is an old title, almost historical, but it was so well written and interesting that you could easily see the events in Patty's life in your minds eye. Jean Webster was one of my mother's favorite writers, and having read another of her books out of curiousity, I had to read more. It's well worth it. Patty charms, tests, and changes you. A very good read.

Definitely not Jean Webster's best...

I picked this up because I happened to come across the author's classic "Daddy Longlegs" and loved it. I was hoping for more of the same. Unfortunately, this book never really "comes together." When it opened, I was wondering if it was a sequel to some other book, as it seemed as if the characters had already been together having adventures. It's a loosely connected series of girl's-school adventures and pranks, mostly led by Patty. But one never really gets a feel for the characters, or WHY Patty gets involved in all these pranks. In one chapter Patty may have apparently good intentions; in another she doesn't seem to care what happens as a consequence of her actions. One never has any real reason to CARE about Patty or her friends. There's no sense of growth in the character (as is very evident in "Daddy Longlegs" and its sequel, "Dear Enemy"). So while I would still recommend the works of Jean Webster, this wouldn't be the place to start!

About the Author

Robin Boustead is a writer and photographer based in Australia. He’s been trekking in the Himalaya since 1992 and in 2008-9 walked the six-month long Great Himalaya Trail for this book.

Excellent guidebook on the Nepal portion of the Great Himalaya Trail

This guidebook describes the Nepal portion of the trek-of-all-treks -- The Great Himalaya Trail, or `GHT'. The GHT is a series of trails along the entire Himalayan range traversing east from Arunachal Pradesh, Bhutan or Tibet, westward across Sikkim, Nepal and north India to Pakistan. The Nepal portion of the GHT is the most well-known and well-traveled (so far).

There are two sets of trails, one high through the mountains, and another parallel to it, and lower, through the upper mid-hills. The latter is sometimes called the `green' or `cultural' GHT and takes the trekker through some beautiful valleys, village-to-village.

The Nepal GHT is conveniently divided into 10 sections, each laid out in the book with small maps and plenty of facts and advice. And, as the author once told me: "It can be as easy or as hard as you like, from a 5-day jolly to a 5-month epic." The guidebook includes trail conditions and levels of difficulty, trekking styles, local ethnic and cultural information, data on rainfall and temperature, wind chill/heat index charts, facts about Kathmandu and Pokhara (popular stopovers), a list of trekking agencies, bibliography, glossary, etc. It also endorses the GHT Code encouraging travelers to observe wise cultural and ecological stewardship.

If you are contemplating trekking all or part of the Nepal GHT, this is your recommended guidebook.

This book takes you along the foot paths of Nepal on routes you won't find in other books.The Great Himalaya Trail is a scenically and culturally very diverse high route.I would not recommend it for beginners.This type of trekking is for people experienced in expedition trekking.

Die Umsetzung dieser Grundbegriffe, im Besonderen des Begriffs der funktionalen Erziehung in traditionalen Kulturen soll Thema dieser Hausarbeit sein. Aus der Fülle des vorhandenen Quellenmaterials werden vier verschiedene Völker ausgewählt und die von ihnen praktizierte funktionale Erziehung während der Kindheit und Jugendphase beschrieben. Ebenso beziehen sich die weiteren Ausführungen im wesentlichen auf die bei diesen Völkern feststellbaren Beobachtungen.

Aus den anfänglichen Reise- und Erlebnisberichten der frühen Forscher des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts hat sich eine umfassende Wissenschaft etabliert; die Ethnologie. Heutzutage ist möglich auf eine Fülle von Berichten, Beschreibungen und Analysen zurückzugreifen, und es stellt sich die öffentliche Meinung ein, dass scheinbar alles erforscht wäre. Auch werden traditionalen Kulturen häufig als rückständig bezeichnet, und der westliche Kolonialisierungstrieb, der heute teilweise unter dem Deckmantel der Entwicklungshilfe auftritt, hat auch im 20. Jahrhundert viel dazu beigetragen, die ursprünglich unberührten und isolierten Kulturen zu verfremden. Dabei erfreut sich die Ethnologie als Hilfswissenschaft in anderen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen neue Beliebtheit. In der Ethnopädagogik wird besonderes Augenmerk auf die facettenreiche Erziehung bei traditionalen Kulturen gelegt. Der Nutzen solcher wissenschaftlicher Bemühungen ergibt sich letztlich dadurch, dass erst durch die Analyse scheinbar fremdartiger Entziehungsverfahren eine völlig neue Sicht auf unserer eigenen Erziehungsmethoden ermöglicht wird. Welchen Einflussfaktoren Erziehung ausgesetzt ist und wie sich auch die individuelle Lebensweise in der Erziehung niederschlägt ist an Hand der Betrachtung fremder Kulturen gut nachvollziehbar und soll in dieser Hausarbeit dargestellt werden.

Unbelievably banal advice

From the other reviews, I can see that I am a dissenter. Perhaps this is because, rather than an executive seeking practical advice, I am an educator who is looking for ideas to use for teaching and writing.

To achieve "supply chain excellence" - which means developing an efficient supply chain to strategic purpose - the authors say there are 5 steps: 1) find talent; 2) use the right technology; 3) eliminate "cross-fuinctional disconnects"; 4) collaborate with other companies; 5) implement well. Unbelievable as it may seem, that is about it for the ideas, though they do add detail, such as needing good metrics and upper management involvement in order to get everyone in the organization with the plan. Forgive me if I am off base here, but I would think that any competent supply chain manager would, like, already know these things.

In my experience, most business press books merit only a quick look at the introduction and conclusion. This is because they are essentially expanded articles, i.e. a few ideas are padded into a full book. Only very rare books in this genre, such as the truly excellent "Fifth Discipline" or "Good to Great", deserve a close read in their entirety. Unfortunately, I would recommend only reading the cover flap of this book.

As a supply chain executive, I have read several journals, books etc and quite honestly of late I have been hungry for some new, relevant and meaningful learning. This book truly stands out and offers something valuable to learn. An outstanding blend of technical, social and strategic insight in a field that is rapidly becoming a differentiator for companies. This book offers powerful ideas that are truly applicable in the real world of supply chain management. A must read for senior supply chain executives. Not only does this book dive deep into powerful supply chain concepts relevant in today's world, it also provides unique and valuable insight into the social challenges of the field - hiring the right talent, internal and external collaboration, change management all the way up to the boardroom etc.

The New Supply Chain Agenda is one of the better books I have read in the past couple of years. It is well organized and easy to follow, and even though it discusses topics we've all seen before (i.e. supplier collaboration, executive support), it does a great job of bringing them all together in only a couple hundred pages.

There are a couple of areas in particular that I felt were exactly what the supply management field needs to hear. The book encourages organizations to hire for talent, which includes skills and attributes beyond functional expertise. I believe this is something all sectors should keep in mind. Secondly, the chapter on selecting the right technology offers some great advice about managing the technical issues along with the people issues. I would suggest "assigning" this chapter to anybody involved in a system implementation project.

Not to give away the ending, but the book concludes with some very good case studies. Like the previous chapters, it includes specific action steps to take.

Overall, a very good book and one I would recommend for students, instructors and professionals in supply chain management.

Peter Pan syndrome? Then you need to read this book!

I know very little about Jungian psychology, but this book caught my eye years ago. I started reading it again and it has made me aware of so much WHY about my life and struggles. It is frighteningly accurate in its descriptions of the puer aeternus and the best and worst of that archetype. I don't agree with some of the Jungian conclusions and assumptions, but the descriptive parts of this book are INVALUABLE if you're ready to face them. I'm finally facing them.

Useful and Entertaining

I was informed by my therapist that I have a strong "puer aeternus" archetype and resolved to read around the subject.

I found Miss Von Franz's book to be useful and very entertaining.

It is essentially an extended lecture delivered with great style and clarity with many lengthy but fascinating anecdotes and deviations.

I actually read the Little Prince when studying French and again in Spanish but I didn't "get it" at all. To see the story interpreted by a Jungian analyst is quite enlightening. The Jungian world view is certainly rather strange and I found myself confused at times by some of the concepts and terminology but all in all it is an excellent book.

Von Franz' interpretation of fairy-tale, myths, as well as the stories in Puer Aeternus, are always so brilliant, illuminating, and convincing. In Puer Aeternus, she analyzes stories written by boy-eternals, translating the symbolism of the story into convincing analysis of the author's unhealthy, infantile condition. But she doesn't just drop the hammer, she also provides insight into the positive qualities of being boy-eternal.

Her interpretation is always backed with a wealth of interesting comparisons that range from ancient texts, to her experience analyzing patient's dreams/psyches. It's pretty undeniable, her larger than life genius; her immense scholarly knowledge funneled through a brilliant mind, on the most fascinating subjects.

Like all of Von Franz' books, a great tool for self development. Always life-changing. I walked away feeling that I gained a new perspective on not only myself, but many other people.
