The Face: Cartography of the Void, by Chris Abani

In The Face: Cartography of the Void, acclaimed poet, novelist, and screenwriter Chris Abani has given us a brief memoir that is, in the best tradition of the genre, also an exploration of the very nature of identity. Abani meditates on his own face, beginning with his early childhood that was immersed in the Igbo culture of West Africa. The Face is a lush work of art that teems with original and profound insights into the role of race, culture, and language in fashioning our sense of self. Abani’s writing is poetic, filled with stories, jokes, and reflections that draw readers into his fold; he invites them to explore their own “faces” and the experiences that have shaped them.

As Abani so lovingly puts it, this extended essay contemplates “all the people who have touched my face, slapped it, punched it, kissed it, washed it, shaved it. All of that human contact must leave some trace, some of the need and anger that motivated that touch. This face is softened by it all. Made supple by all the wonder it has beheld, all the kindness, all the generosity of life.” The Face is a gift to be read, re-read, shared, and treasured, from an author at the height of his artistic powers. Abani directs his gaze both inward and out toward the world around him, creating a self-portrait in which readers will also see their own faces reflected.

Abani’s essay is part of a groundbreaking new series from Restless Books called The Face, in which a diverse group of writers takes readers on a guided tour of that most intimate terrain: their own faces. Visit www.restlessbooks.com/the-face-series for more information.

Review
“A fascinating meditation on identity that explores the novelist’s own mixed heritage and mixed feelings….A true citizen of the world….With great insight and compassion, Abani reveals that behind his—and every—face are unseen scars.”

—San Francisco Chronicle

“I devoured it a single sitting. It’s light and easy, and also heavy and thought-provoking. It’s not exactly a memoir, but it’s a moving and funny account of inhabiting what Esi Edugyan calls the ‘yes, but where are you really from?’ question.”

— The New Inquiry

“Chris Abani describes his face as ‘a mixture of two races, of two cultures, of two lineages’ (he was born in Nigeria to an Igbo father and English mother), writing with humor, anguish and acceptance about ancestry and family and ‘wearing’ his father's face.”

— Patricia Hagen, Minneapolis Star Tribune

“This is a man who has seen the darkness in humans and who still [mostly] likes us, who can laugh, make jokes, love others deeply. We feel safe with him, and if he can’t save us when something bad happens, at least we shared something real with another for awhile. Abani writes fiction and poetry—how real and important can that be? Quite real enough to reveal both the dark heart and warm center that most humans harbor.”

—The Bowed Bookshelf

“Chris Abani might be the most courageous writer working right now. There is no subject matter he finds daunting, no challenge he fears. Aside from that, he’s stunningly prolific and writes like an angel. If you want to get at the molten heart of contemporary fiction, Abani is the starting point.”

— Dave Eggers

“Chris Abani is easily one of most important voices in literature today.”

— Warscapes

“What do our faces say about us — and how much of what they say is fair? That’s one of the questions posed by Restless Books’s intriguing new series The Face, in which writers use their own countenances as launchpads into the imaginative stratosphere . . . in Chris Abani‘s Cartography of the Void, part of the series’s inaugural triptych (along with short works by Ruth Ozeki and Tash Aw), we’re not disappointed . . . Can we dismiss the significance of our faces when they bear so strongly the marks of who we were as much as who we are? It could seem like a pessimistic question. But Abani isn’t pessimistic. Seeing his father in himself is troubling but it also opens up a path to understanding. And so it is that he can hope: ‘That my face, and my father’s face, and his father’s face before him will blaze in an unending lineage of light and forgiveness.’”

— Charles Arrowsmith, House of SpeakEasy

“Abani is a force to be reckoned with, a world-class novelist and poet.”

— Russell Banks, author of Lost Memory of Skin

“Abani has the energy, ambition and compassion to create a novel that delineates and illuminates a complicated, dynamic, deeply fractured society.”

— Los Angeles Times

“Abani [is] a fluid, closely observant writer.”

— The Washington Post

“Abani is a fiction writer of mature and bounteous gifts.”

— The New York Times

“A master, a literary shaman.”

— Brad Kessler, author of Birds in Fall

“Abani writes in a fearless prose.”

— Time Out Chicago

A moving and unsentimental take on race from a great Nigerian-American writer.
By Avidity Jones
Chris Abani is a poet and a storyteller, and you get the sense reading his long-form essay, "The Face," that he'd tell you the two things aren't so different. But this book is much more than just poetry and lyricism (which it has in spades); it's a profound exploration of race and identity, African history and personal history, that is utterly unique and yet somehow also universal and above all, timely. Abani was born into the Igbo tribal culture in Nigeria, and now he lives in Chicago. He's also lived many places in between, his identity shifting in relation to his setting:

"When I lived in East Los Angeles, a predominately Chicano/Latino neighborhood, I was assumed to be Dominican or Panamanian. In Miami, where I go regularly for religious reasons, I am confused for a Cuban. In New Zealand I was assumed to be Maori. In Australia, Aborigine. In Egypt, Nubian. In Qatar, Pakistani. In South Africa, Zulu or some other group, depending on who was talking. Other times, because of my accent, which is a mix of Nigerian, British, and now American inflections, I am assumed to be from “one of the islands.” No one accepts my Nigerianness, not without argument. In fact, the two things I have been rarely taken for— Nigerian and white—are the very things that form my DNA."

I loved this book, which as a Kindle Single makes for the perfect single-sitting read. After I read it, I walked around inspired—it's the kind of book to give a friend or enemy, saying "Read this, you'll feel better, both in head and heart."

An elegant read that reads you
By ebele
Thought provoking reflection on that which is both strange, communal, and personal- the face. You'll journey with the author into the places where our complex lives weave into the bigger narrative of the bloodlines we represent; the circles we run - around love and hate, identity and conformity; the things we disown to find we cannot truly disown; the ways we both remember and forget. Running through it all is the understated but graceful, even beautiful way these tensions and the profound mystery of it all-being, identity and belonging- is pinned to earth in the unique faces we wear. After reading, your face & everyone else's will no longer be 'just' a face to you!

Essential reading
By BowedBookshelf
The work of Chris Abani crosses national boundaries. He calls himself a “global Igbo,” referring to his lineage, and to the fact that he has so many foreign influences on his experience as a Nigerian. Brought up privileged in an educated middle-class household with a white British mother and an Oxford-educated Igbo father, Abani had access to western music, American novels, Bollywood films, Indian mysticism as a youth. He was a precocious fourth son, starting to write in his early teens.

His face, which he talks about in this memoir, has a kind of universality so that people often mistake him for Lebanese, Arab, Indian, Dominican, Cuban, Hawaiian, or Maori. When his Korean manicurist in L.A. called his face “comfortable,” Abani writes "Comfortable face. I liked it. Made me think of a well-worn armchair that I’d like to collapse into after a rough day. A face made for sitting in. Where one could sip a sweet spicy ginger tea and talk about love and books and karaoke. A face worn in by living, worn in by suffering, by pain, by loss, but also by laughter and joy and the gifts of love and friendship, of family, of travel, of generations of DNA blending to make a true mix of human. I think of all the stress and relief of razors scraping hair from my face. Of extreme weather. Of rain. Of sun. I think of all the people who have touched my face, slapped it, punched it, kissed it, washed it, shaved it. All of that human contact must leave some trace, some of the need and anger that motivated that touch. This face is softened by it all. Made supple by all the wonder it has beheld, all the kindness, all the generosity of life.
Comfortable face."It is not just the face of Chris Abani that is comfortable. He makes us comfortable about ourselves, about the world, about our fears and aspirations. Abani’s fiction reveals the insides of characters who are often different in some way, their very differentness expressing their underlying and universal humanity. We are all different from one another. It is our differentness that makes us the same.

At the same time, Abani makes us uncomfortable. In an essay for Witness magazine entitled, “Ethics and Narrative: the Human and Other,” he writes "In making my art, and sometimes when I teach, I am like a crazed, spirit-filled, snake-handling, speaking-in-tongues, spell-casting, Babylon-chanting-down, new-age, evangelical preacher wildly kicking the crutches away from my characters, forcing them into their pain and potential transformation. Alas, or maybe not, I also kick the crutches away from my readers. And many have fled from the revival tents of my art, screaming in terror."When we go to dark places in ourselves, Abani suggests, we can come back, better. “When you are at your worst, you can see yourself most clearly.” At your worst, you can see your choices most clearly, and choose goodness, compassion. This is a man who has seen the darkness in humans and who still [mostly] likes us, who can laugh, make jokes, love others deeply. We feel safe with him, and if he can’t save us when something bad happens, at least we shared something real with another for awhile. Abani writes fiction and poetry—how real and important can that be? Quite real enough to reveal both the dark heart and warm center that most humans harbor. “Language actually makes the world in which we live.” Language, and literature, at its best, can be transformative. We can create our world anew by what we say, what we think, what we read, what we write. But we therefore have an obligation to use words [and actions] that do not harsh the environment, but gentle it, that explain and improve the world.

Abani is a black man, but his writing has few markers for what passes for “black” in America. In a 2014 interview with Rumpus Magazine Abani tells Rumpus interviewer Peter Orner that having grown up in a black-majority country, he was not defined by his race until he left Nigeria and went to Britain and the United States.

Though he has lived in the United States for some ten years or more, Abani does not write in the style of white or black America, though he clarifies in an NPR interview (Illinois), “Africa could never have the literature it does without the influence of black Americans.” African literature makes no attempt to fit into the Western canon: African writers are having this conversation over here, and if you want to join in you must make accommodation. Interestingly, Abani finds writing in America freeing, partly because of the language, which is constantly influenced by our immigrant population, and because of the vitality and variety of experience and geography.

Abani’s students, and we readers, often “forget he is black” because he assumes the right to speak with his own voice and deals with universal themes. But Abani observes and occasionally writes of the oppression of black people in this country: "Slavery [in Amerca] is not really over". In this memoir he mentions that when he is stopped while driving, the cops seem surprised and almost “offended by his [British] accent.” He recognizes that as an educated middle-class African, he has a privileged position in American society. “Race in America has more to do with social position than it has to do with biological race.”

Abani now teaches writing at Northwestern University in Chicago. Daria Tunca of the University of Liège in Belgium has compiled a wonderfully complete bibliography of Abani’s work (and short biography) which includes links to interviews, readings, and Abani’s website. I share my favorite links below because I feel his work is essential reading/listening. Somehow the issues we face in the world are pointed to by this big man with the small voice and small toes. And he gives us some answers: You reflect my humanity back at me. Ubuntu.

The Panza Monologues, by Virginia Grise, Irma Mayorga

The Panza Monologues is an original solo performance piece based on women's stories about their panzas—tú sabes—that roll of belly we all try to hide. Written, compiled, and collected by Virginia Grise and Irma Mayorga and fashioned into a tour-de-force solo performance, The Panza Monologues features the words of Chicanas speaking with humor and candor. Their stories boldly place the panza front and center as a symbol that reveals the lurking truths about women's thoughts, lives, loves, abuses, and living conditions.

This second edition of The Panza Monologues presents the performance script in its entirety, as well as a rich supporting cast of dramaturgical and pedagogical materials. These include a narrative history of the play’s development by the playwrights; critical materials that enhance and expand upon the script’s themes and ideas (a short introduction to San Antonio, where the play was developed; playwright autogeographies; and a manifesto on women of color making theater); and a selection of pedagogical and creative ideas, including guidelines and advice for staging a production of the play and for teaching it in the classroom, community-making activities (screenings, hosting “Panza Parties,” community/group discussions), and creative writing activities connected to the play.

This was an amazing book! If you're looking for wonderful Spanish and English bilingual poetry dealing with a part of our bodies that is rarely loved and spoken of, this is it!
The Panza Monologues is a poetry book co-written by two wonderful authors that deals with stomachs/flab/love handles/anything-else-you-may-call-it. There is no set genre, but the fixed theme is "tummies." This may not sound interesting to many, but try reading several poems such as "From Cha-Cha to Panza" and "Sucking It In" - they're wonderful, relatable writings!

Power to the Panza
By Barbara Renaud Gonzalez
I loved this book. It is harmoniously crammed with Chicana stories, back stories, fundraising plans, playwriting theory, and more, so that I am beginning to understand the sheer wealth of this artform, and it's great potential for my community.

The stories are heartbreakingly exposed and written so that they will leave you gasping. Virginia Grise is a devastating
writer who made me laugh through the tears of truth. I wish that many, many, women read and use this manual, this book, this Panza-bible.

150 Years of ObamaCare, by Daniel E. Dawes

In this groundbreaking book, health-care attorney Daniel E. Dawes explores the secret backstory of the Affordable Care Act, shedding light on the creation and implementation of the greatest and most sweeping equalizer in the history of American health care. An eye-opening and authoritative narrative written from an insider’s perspective, 150 Years of ObamaCare debunks contemporary understandings of health reform. It also provides a comprehensive and unprecedented review of the health equity movement and the little-known leadership efforts that were crucial to passing public policies and laws reforming mental health, minority health, and universal health.

An instrumental player in a large coalition of organizations that helped shape ObamaCare, Dawes tells the story of the Affordable Care Act with urgency and intimate detail. He reveals what went on behind the scenes by including copies of letters and e-mails written by the people and groups who worked to craft and pass the law. Dawes explains the law through a health equity lens, focusing on what it is meant to do and how it affects various groups. Ultimately, he argues that ObamaCare is much more comprehensive in the context of previous reform efforts than is typically understood.

In an increasingly polarized political environment, health reform has been caught in the cross fire of the partisan struggle, making it difficult to separate fact from fiction. Offering unparalleled and complete insight into the efforts by the Obama administration, Congress, and external stakeholders, 150 Years of ObamaCare illuminates one of the most challenging legislative feats in the history of the United States.

Review

Putting the struggle to pass and implement the Affordable Care Act into historic perspective is a valuable contribution to understanding how difficult this effort has been and how significant the passage of health reform is for the citizens and the economy of our country. Daniel Dawes brings to life the extraordinary efforts of advocates, lawmakers, and citizens to increase access to quality health care for those who have long been marginalized and excluded. 150 years of Obamacare is an important and comprehensive volume.

(Kathleen Sebelius, former Secretary of Health and Human Services)

In this groundbreaking work, Dawes cuts through the noise by combining a history of past public policies and the health equity movement in America with his intimate knowledge of the ACA. He puts the law into context and powerfully explains what is at stake in the future for health reform.

(Andrew Young, Ambassador)

In extending health insurance coverage to millions of people, the Affordable Care Act is a game-changer for those with mental health and substance use disorders. Daniel Dawes tells the story of how the law was developed and passed―and its role in reshaping American health care. An illuminating study for anyone who cares about health equity!

(Patrick J. Kennedy, former Congressman, author of A Common Struggle)

150 Years of ObamaCare is a masterful and thought-provoking, must read, exploration of health reform past, present, and future.

(Garth Graham, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Minority Health)

This book tells the little-known and never publicized story about the work of congressional leaders―behind the scenes―to ensure that health equity would be a core goal of this landmark legislation. Daniel Dawes illuminates the nuts-and-bolts processes of getting it done and ensuring that certain communities would not again be left behind or left out!

(Donna Christensen, MD, former Congresswoman)

Daniel Dawes provides an impressive, brilliant, evenhanded and deeply convincing narrative on why ObamaCare matters, how it impacts different groups in our society, and what is left to do. This book should be read by everyone interested in health care, politics, health policy, or civil rights.

(Louis Sullivan, former Secretary of Health and Human Services and author, Breaking Ground: My Life in Medicine)

... An informative and enticing book... Dawes combines his on-the-ground perspective with that of a longtime scholar and advocate for the reduction and elimination of health disparities.

(Health Affairs)

... This text is invaluable for its data alone. Dawes provides an informed perspective on U.S. health care, its evolution, and how the ACA ultimately became law; but ObamaCare is also a good information source, a neutral chronicle... I enthusiastically recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the act and U.S. health care policy.

The definitive history of Obamacare
By Amazon Customer
Daniel Dawes' book is a fantastic history of healthcare legislation in this country. Who knew healthcare legislation went as far back as it does. Mr. Dawes' research is impeccable. He delves into the history but most importantly deconstructs Obamacare so that it is more understandable. His writing in incisive, clear, poignant, and stimulating. Mr. Dawes has written the definitive history of Obamacare.

88 Tell-Tale Signs of Narcissistic Mothers and Toxic Mothers: Overt and Covert Narcissistic Abuse: Transcend Mediocrity, Book 64, by J.B.

If you're reading this, chances are you may have a toxic or narcissistic mother in your life. She may be your mother, your mother-in-law, or your grandmother. You often feel as though something is wrong when you are in this person's presence, though you can't quite put your finger on it. She tends to make you feel tired and emotionally drained when you are around her.

Narcissistic and toxic mothers are often injured in their childhoods by their own stunted emotional development. In order to fully develop into a healthy adult, we need a very nurturing and emotionally validating environment. Toxic and narcissistic mothers often grow up without that nurturing. They have jumped through hoops and tailored themselves to others around them. They have been invited to be a part of mind games, lies, and manipulation. They may have been told repeatedly that they weren't wanted.

Narcissistic and toxic mothers can be very damaging to those around them. They have been often violated and hurt by others themselves. They see the world around them as being cruel, and so they take a defensive stance against others. They bore easily and struggle to keep their own emotions in check. For this reason they seem to enjoy being in a constant state of drama in the relationships around them.

They are often experiencing great sadness, shame, guilt, and depression in their inner cores due to a lack of healing the things that happened to them. They need others to save them from themselves. They need others to provide a constant state of interaction with them in order to distract them from the pain they are feeling inside. They have to project their pain onto others to share it because they cannot find healthy and meaningful ways in which to deal with it themselves.

Another quick but potent read
By Oath
I liked the numbered list of signs. It was a painful book to read. I recognized a ton of signs as being that of a parent, however...the book handicaps itself by entitling itself about MOTHERS. All and I mean all of the familiar signs in the book were instantly relatable to being about narcissistic fathers. All of them. In my case it felt creepy and off putting because my mother is not narcissistic....but my father certainly had a majority of the signs in this book.

I feel these kind of books end abruptly and although they hit the bullseye on diagnosing NPD in others, they tend to be light on how to heal from such abuse

I also, due to experience, reject that silence and a straight face are potent tools for responding to narcissistic episodes. To the contrary, it makes victim appear weak and stoic. I much prefer a response of, "Grow up." Or, "That is not is not even worth responding to. " Or my own personal favorite, "Your father must have messed you up bad to make you get pleasure in hurting me " That one was a shoulder dropper and he instantly lowered his head and walked away.

Still, the info this book did provide was relatable and eerily familiar. Thanks for writing it!!!

My husbands mother.
By Cam
If you have an overbearing mother-in-law or mother, this is a book for you. This was an easy read and very informative. I have seen many of these signs with my mother-in-law. I would often discuss the things she did with my friends because I would wonder if others would feel the same way I did if someone treated them this way. I wondered if I was just over reacting or just jealous. It took me awhile to realize it wasn't me, that she would act this way with anyone he married.

Atomic physics: An exploration through problems and solutions, by Dmitry Budker, Derek Kimball, David DeMille

This book provides a bridge between the basic principles of physics learned as an undergraduate and the skills and knowledge required for advanced study and research in the exciting field of atomic physics. The text is organized in a unique and versatile format --- as a collection of problems, hints, detailed solutions, and in-depth tutorials. This enables the reader to open the book at any page and get a solid introduction to subjects on the cutting edge of atomic physics, such as frequency comb metrology, tests of fundamental symmetries with atoms, atomic magnetometers, atom trapping and cooling, and Bose-Einstein condensates. The text also includes problems and tutorials on important basics that every practicing atomic physicist should know, but approached from the perspective of experimentalists: formal calculations are avoided where possible in favor of 'back-of-the-envelope' estimates, symmetry arguments, and physical analogies. The 2nd edition contains over 10 new problems, and includes important updates, revisions, and corrections of several problems of the 1st edition.

Great way to fill in knowledge gaps
By Andrew Dawes
This book is not a typical textbook and as such may be hard to learn from as a first text on your own. To aid these readers, many problems are indicated as Tutorials and cover a topic in a more introductory way. With a course lecture, or as a supplemental text it works well, and it is best suited for students familiar with the basics but looking for ways to tackle advanced topics that come directly from the lab.

I keep this book nearby and turn to it often as a way to get some practice and fill in the gaps in my understanding of this broad (and growing) field. Very few books present "theory for experimentalists" but this book succeeds at doing exactly that.

Lots of valuable nuggets in this book. Particularly useful for grad students and above doing experimental research in atomic physics.

A must-have for atomic physicists
By ADP
Any time you want to get a quick introduction to a new subject in atomic physics, this book is the perfect place to start. Especially if you're an experimentalist. Do note that this book is written for those who have finished the basic undergraduate curriculum (quantum, E&M, etc.). One of the nice things about the text is that each problem and solution is self-contained so that if you want to learn, say, about frequency combs, you can just skip ahead to read and work on the problem on frequency combs. Great reference!

The Mystery of Melchizedek
Who was this strange Priest/King that received tithes from Abraham? (…and administered bread and wine to him?)
How is Melchizedek relevant to the Messiah of Israel?
Did Melchizedek have a temple that predated Solomon’s?
Is the Jewish Kingdom as portrayed in the Old Testament simply an intermediate parenthesis within a larger expanse?
Why are the distinctives so divergent from the enforced separation of the kingship and priesthood under David?
Were the bread and wine served by Melchizedek eschatological? Did they embrace the Cross? (They, too, echo across the pages of the OT)
Was the Lord’s Communion anticipated in Gen. 14?
Deriving from some very recent discoveries in Jerusalem (although some are yet to be confirmed) these studies may challenge many of the comfortable traditions that have shaped our classic Biblical perspectives.
Join us as we explore some fascinating challenges to our previous understandings of things that shape our ultimate destiny…

Pretty good, but not great!
By Dean Goossen Mtn Area Calvary Chapel
This book gives some interesting perspective on the contrasts betwewn the Levital priesthood and the Melchizadecian priesthood. Although that was very interesting, I guess I was hoping for some earthshaking new information. For the price it is a worthy read.

Mere Melchizedek
By Ashtar Command
This is a short and not particularly mysterious exegetic 101 about Melchizedek and the epistle to the Hebrews. It doesn't say anything new or out of the ordinary, except (perhaps) when author Chuck Missler indicates that the period when Israel was God's chosen people is a “Jewish parenthesis”, something I suppose classical dispensationalists would not say. However, he doesn't elaborate. Nor does the article mention any new discoveries in Jerusalem, as the editorial review claims. Something of a disappointment, actually. I had expected something more along the lines of, say, Michael Heiser or even Margaret Barker!

A read you don't want to miss
By Dana "Dr.D" Richardson
Really cool research, very insightful, and it feeds in well with modern insights such as "The Language of God," by Francis S. Collins. I would say to anyone, churched, non churched, Christian or not, believer or not, this book is for you.

Mathematical Topics Between Classical and Quantum Mechanics (Springer Monographs in Mathematics), by Nicholas P. Landsman

This monograph draws on two traditions: the algebraic formulation of quantum mechanics as well as quantum field theory, and the geometric theory of classical mechanics. These are combined in a unified treatment of the theory of Poisson algebras of observables and pure state spaces with a transition probability, which leads on to a discussion of the theory of quantization and the classical limit from this perspective. A prototype of quantization comes from the analogy between the C*- algebra of a Lie groupoid and the Poisson algebra of the corresponding Lie algebroid. The parallel between reduction of symplectic manifolds in classical mechanics and induced representations of groups and C*- algebras in quantum mechanics plays an equally important role. Examples from physics include constrained quantization, curved spaces, magnetic monopoles, gauge theories, massless particles, and $theta$- vacua. Accessible to mathematicians with some prior knowledge of classical and quantum mechanics, and to mathematical physicists and theoretical physicists with some background in functional analysis.
