The reader comes away from this work with a vivid picture of the great Danish author. From his lowly birth, son of an illiterate washerwoman, his early love of music and theatre, his shyness yet profound self-belief which prompted him to leave home to make his fortune in Copenhagen aged only 14, Wullschlager conducts us through his life.
Despite his fairy tales and enjoyment of the company of children, Andersen was far from being merely the naive and child-like personality which some attributed to him. Using his diaries and accounts of those who knew him, the author shows his often depressive and difficult character, and his constant craving for approbation - "We are suffering a good deal from Andersen" wrote Charles Dickens when the latter came for a lengthy stay.
Andersen's work (not just fairy tales but novels, plays, travel works, poetry, and latterly tales aimed at a more adult audience) are shaped by events in his life, and in exerpts from his writings Wullschlager points out the parallels between them.
With a number of b/w photos of Andersen and important places and people in his life, this leaves the reader with a feeling that s/he knows and somewhat understands the writer. Most enjoyable and interesting.

Laugh and Learn

Don't be misled by the humor in this book, it is a thoughtful and insightful look at relationships from an experienced couples therapist, Trevor Silvester. Trevor brings together elements of the NLP model of Preferred Representational Systems and Simple Metaprograms to outline 8 'lovebird' types. He sets out how these types love, their strengths and potential blind spots in relationships. Also how they interact with other Lovebird types. The principles are illustrated with examples and anecdotes, often humorous, which makes them even more memorable.

I have used Trevor's model to explain personality differences to couples who are experiencing relationship problems and they have all found it helpful. Also interesting for those embarking on new relationships who want to learn more about themselves before they leap in.

Love this book!

I highly recommend this book. It is a must read for all kinds of couples in any stage of the game. This book gave me some really great pointers of what I can do to improve my marriage, but more importantly it gave me a deeper understanding of myself and WHY I think the way I think... and that the way I think (though similar because we are both Swans) is different than the way my husband thinks (since my Kingfisher side gets in the way a little). And guess what... That's perfectly normal and fine! We just need to recognize that and find the best way for US and OUR Lovebirds to build the happiest nest we can.

Ignore the negative reviews - it's worth a few bucks to judge for yourself

Let me start by saying I have been an Amazon customer for twenty years and I have *never* reviewed anything before. But I consider this book to important for me to keep my mouth shut. It was a life-changer for me. Don't know why some reviewers are saying it is not helpful for people with severe depression - maybe some people with severe depression need a different approach, but let me speak for the rest of us. I was having suicidal thoughts, and on the highest doses of meds available. I was also in therapy. I tried two different therapists, both of whom wanted to talk about other people in my life - my parents, my husband, etc. - which was not helping me at all. I was at my wit's end, really scared that I was going to hurt myself if things didn't get better soon, when a friend recommended this book. You have to do the exercises - yes, they seem silly, but if they work, who the heck cares? Get a nice little notebook and a pen that you enjoy writing with. I made mine a sort of journal that I doodled in and added little inspirational quotes here and there. And yes, it is deceptively simple. Again, who cares? If standing on my head and whistling "Dixie" would have made me feel this much better, I'd be doing that, too. I started reading the book a month ago. I do not do all the excercises, but I did try all of them. I do what works for me. It's also true that there is the usual filler crap that you get in self-help books "Janet is a 40-year old dental assistant who came to me in 2005 suffering from..." blah, blah, blah. Just skip it. My depression is so much better that I am shocked. I am no longer thinking about suicide, and I am actually able to picture a future that is not completely empty and black. A future!!!!!! I have not had a future in years! I can't express what that means to me, but if you have depression, I don't have to. Try the book. If it doesn't work, I hope you will try something else, and keep on trying. You are not alone, and you deserve to be happy.

Feeling worse - DO NOT READ THIS BOOK EXPECTING TO FEEL BETTER!!!

If there were a way to give this book zero stars I would. I cannot believe that anyone would EVER give this a positive review. For the first part of the book this "doctor" talks about how great CBT it, how great he is for helping to develop it, and how it will help everyone. I kept putting off reading the rest because his ego was so off-putting. Then I finally decided to actually read the book. WHAT A JOKE! The basic underlying message of this book is that none of your feelings are valid, everyone else is right no matter what they say, put aside your opinions or feelings & agree with them no matter what they do to you.

Actual quote from the book "there has never been a single time in your life when the critical comments of some other person upset you - even to a small extent. No matter how vicious, heartless, or cruel these comments may be they have no power to disturb you or to create even a little bit of discomfort". This is a straight up lie. The psychological effects of verbal abuse have been found to include fear, anxiety, depression, stress, PTSD, intrusive memories, memory gap disorders, sleep & eating problems, hyper-vigilance, exaggerated startle responses, irritability, anger issues, substance abuse, self-mutilation, aggressive behavior, and suicide.

The authors advice to you is that when someone calls you a worthless piece of &#^$ you need to empathize with that person, ask them questions to further clarify exactly what makes you a worthless piece of &#^$, then find something with which to agree with them on that makes you a worthless piece of &#^$. Seriously! For every situation in life he also directs you to create a column chart. Nobody has the time to do this without disrupting their lives multiple times every day.

He gives some examples of his advice to patients. A woman's husband has cheated on her with his secretary & continued to do so for 8 months even after she found out. She naturally was upset about this as most people in a committed relationship would be. He tells her that she needs to see things from his point of view & realize that he was in a can't win situation. He loved his wife & his secretary, plus she was so attractive. Basically he's really the victim in this situation and there is no reason for her to be upset. She just needs to adjust all of her thoughts & see things his way. I can't even believe that someone would publish this as a self-help book, except as a joke. The rest of the book goes on the same & it is sickening. This guy is a misogynist with no understanding whatsoever of anxiety & depression. Anyone implementing the advice in this book would only cause themselves more harm unless they were lobotomized in order to have no feelings whatsoever. Please do not give this author any more money by wasting your dollars on this horrendous, harmful book.

YOU NEED THIS BOOK!!!!!

This book is awesome. It makes sense, and is written in understandable, everyday language. The exercises are specific and helpful (except for the "clicker" recommendation. It's not that wearing a clicker to give yourself credit for positive outcomes is a bad idea, it's just that you would need clickers from shoulder to wrist to follow Dr. Burns' advice to the letter. That's a very nit-picky point about a life-changing manual, though.) Anyway, this book has given me a totally different perspective on life and the problems it contains, and I'm deeply, deeply grateful to Dr. Burns for the improvement he has made in my life. If I had access to a competent cognitive behavioral therapist I think I could escape depression entirely, but this book has made a huge dent in my mood and personality disorders and I highly recommend it.

The Orleans rehabilitation

Ostensibly an account of French political history between 1814 and 1848, The Perilous Crown focuses chiefly on the July Monarchy. Even the first few chapters, dealing with the hundred days and Bourbon restoration up to 1830, are related from the point of view of Louis-Philippe and his sister Adelaide. Indeed, one of the book's surprises is its discovery of, or emphasis on, the importance and influence of Adelaide on Louis-Philippe's career and on restoration-era French politics. This largely reflects Munro's discovery of hitherto untapped / ignored sets of letters in two chateaus and at the national archives. The Perilous Crown is thus sympathetic to the Orleans. It argues Louis-Philippe's regime left a lasting liberal and parliamentary legacy, and that far from being doomed, it fell for avoidable, high-political reasons. The Bourbons, meanwhile, get a far less sympathetic hearing - whether they deserve any better is of course debatable.

None of this is meant as criticism of Munro's well-researched and artfully crafted piece. Like any historian, Munro takes a point of view and works from a particular set of sources, aiming to contribute something new and interesting to his topic. His narrative is attractive and makes for easy reading. It is peppered with quotes and anecdotes without being over-burdened. And in spite of its particular angle, it is general enough to serve as a good introduction to the period. Finally, all contributions are welcome to this neglected period of French history.

Jardin's Restoration and Reaction 1815-1848 has more material on the 1815-1830 period but is a drier work. If you are a student and are working on the July Monarchy, the most complete English-language overview probably remains Collingham's The July Monarchy (published in 1988). Munro's book has the advantage of the most up-to-date bibliography. But the reference work, sadly, remains Thureau-Dangin's seven-volume Histoire de la Monarchie de Juillet, published in the 1890s (in French - good luck!).

A Good Study Guide

Since I was interested in obtaining SAP certifications, and I wanted to give myself the best chance possible to succeed in the exam. This book does not contain the actualo test questions that will appear on the exam. It is a Pretest with questions like the ones that will appear on your test, and going over them will help you study and prepare for when the actual test is sitting on a desk in front of you.. The sample questions were gathered by authors that have actually passed the test, so you can feel comfortable that the book will have material that will be correct and helpful to you as you study.

I purchased this book, and studied the Pre-Test contained in the book, IThe author, NS Thind has a simpe writing style that makes grasping the subject matter at hand simple to do. I now feel ready to take my certification exams after completely reviewing the book. Anyone who is going to take these certification tests really ought to purchase this book in order to properly prepare for the examination. Your earning potential can be impacted after this exam, so preparing properly for this test and getting the extra edge provided by this bok, which costs so little, can make a huge difference in your prepardness for the exam when it finally comes time to take it.

As someone wishing to ace my SAP certification exam, I've done everything in my power to study and prepare. This exam, in my opinion, is crucial to landing the position I've been working towards, and furthering my career. NS Thind's books have been invaluable to this process. This is the third book I've purchased from him on this topic, and once again I'm not disappointed. The book's content is perfect for those of us studying for the certification, especially with the insightful pretest. The multiple choice questions truly help the taker prepare for the exam, and the available answers help you gain more understanding and insight into the questions and material covered. Thind's knowledge and experience is obvious throughout the entire book, which is well-written and easy to follow. Data Modeling is a bit of an art and the certification can ask really tricky questions around it. Thanks to the practice I have had with this book, I feel I can confidently tackle this section now. I highly recommend it to anyone planning to take the SAP certification exam.

About the Author

Robert W. Bauman holds a Ph.D. in Biology from Stanford University, an M.A. in Botany from the University of Texas at Austin, and a B.A. in Biology from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a full professor of biology in the Department of Biological Sciences at Amarillo College in Amarillo, Texas, where he previously served as department chair. He has been teaching microbiology and human anatomy and physiology since 1988, and was a recipient of the John. F. Mead Faculty Excellence Award, nominated by the students of Amarillo College. Dr. Bauman is an active member of the American Society of Microbiology (ASM), Texas Community College Teacher’s Association (TCCTA), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS).

If you are taking microbiology or just want to learn something new, definitely get this textbook. It is very well written and easy to read. There are plenty of neat pictures and interest information for your mind to absorb. Oh! And I should also mention that I aced my microbiology class with this textbook!

Very useful information that I needed and searched everywhere to find.
