About the Author
A. T. Weaver is the pen name of a grandmother of eleven, great-grandmother of one. She lives with her cat, Cleopatra, in downtown Kansas City, MO. When she was growing up, the word gay meant happy and carefree and homosexuals were called queer or ‘one-of-those’. However, she never heard those terms until she was married and a mother. In 2003, through a TV show called Boy Meets Boy, A.T ‘met’ over 3,000 gay men in a Yahoo group. These men educated her as to the inequalities suffered by the LGBT community and she became a staunch ally. She visited one of the men in San Francisco who lived just up the street from the Castro. As he showed her around, they stopped in front of what was once Harvey Milk’s camera store. Her question, “Who was Harvey Milk?” started her education into Gay history. A. T.’s aim is to move you in some way. Whether you laugh or cry, love it or hate it, she welcomes all comments, whether good or bad.

I had difficulty writing this review. Shifter Born had some good points but many negative as well. In the interest of fairness and honesty, I am going to tell you what I felt. There are going to be some spoilers so be forewarned.
My first impression of the book, stemming from the first 8% on my Kindle, was that it was overly simplistic in writing style. It felt like a writing assignment from a 10th grade English student. I was not captured by the events going on. It felt rushed and quickly told as if we were trying to skim the details to get on to the bulk of the story. Unfortunately this was the feeling I got throughout the book. We never settled down into the story but always skimmed through from one time period to the next. The writing did get a little better in style and flow but the details were always vague.
I never felt any connection to Marrok’s loves. The attraction he had at first with almost all of them seemed shallow and I’m not sure how they lasted the lengths they did. The sex scenes were perfunctory and clinical. There was no passion at all in them and in a few I questioned the other man’s enjoyment of the act entirely. There was no sense of caring or love, they did nothing to further the romance and it made them feel out of place. As if they were there because it was expected, not because the author really wanted to describe the act or show us the connection.
Lastly, the details of the modern era were unrealistic. How did he survive that long without a job and money? Without knowledge of technology? How did he get a drivers licenses through the years with only the one identity? The author went to so much trouble figuring stuff out for the earlier years but not for the modern age.
Now, the good. The story premise was great. Seeing how an Immortal dealt with the loss of loves throughout time, how he managed to keep under the radar and keep his homesteads was interesting. The author put a lot of work into research of the historical data of times and places, which I commend. The use of French peppered through helped keep Marrok’s accent in my head when reading and lent some ambiance that the description lacked.
I really liked Brian and felt his relationship with “Derrik” to be the most healthy of them all. Derrik wasn’t forced to give up anything to be with Marrok and I wish he had been the final relationship.
In the end, I found it to be an okay read. Maybe I’m too picky and you will like her writing style and can see past the flaws, in which case the story is good. I couldn’t get past its faults.

A good read
By Susan Reaves
When a book keeps me up past my bedtime, I know it is good!
I hesitated to read this book. I have read all of the other books by this author and really enjoyed them. I hesitated because it seemed such a divergent path for her to suddenly write a sub-genre book with supernatural characters. I reminded myself about having read Ann Rice's vampire series and the Twilight series so decided to give it a try.
I read the first few pages on line. It didn't light up for me. I decided to download it anyway, out of loyalty to the author. I ran out of things to read. I told myself, "Well, you paid almost five dollars for it- why not read it?" So I read it and LOVED IT.
Apparantly, you can teach an old dog new tricks. Or an old shifter can entertain me. Perhaps I need to check out more authors in the sub-genre now that I am initiated.

An Excellent Read
By Amber Flowers
You know those books that keep you up long past the point you should have been snoozing? Yeah, this was one of those for me.
I'll admit it. I'm a sucker for a happy ending; I'll spend an entire series rooting for one. Particularly when at least one of the parties hasn't had it so good to date. I'll also be the first to admit an immediate interest in just about anything magical, mystical, or paranormal – that being my primary reason for wanting to read this book in the first place.
Shifter Born definitely hit both of those points. Seeing the life and loves of an immortal being through several centuries was exceptionally intriguing. One of the things I appreciated the most was Marrok's occasional super-humanizing moments, despite being more advanced in age: the confusion over his Osage lover's name and his impatience with Tim resonated with me. I certainly prefer that sort of attitude to the "infinite patience and wisdom" model so often adopted with immortal beings.
That being said, I think the only downside to this book, in my opinion, is that it's relatively short. I could have easily enjoyed the story at twice the length, with the chance to be pulled deeper into the story.
