Strikingly well-written

Hunt is one of those writers who is dangerous to lay readers because she writes so much better than her fellow-scholars that one reads only her. No doubt there are historians who differ with her, but I am unlikely ever to read them because they are dry and dusty, and she enthralls.
It is a mystery to me how she does it. Her source materials are account books, insurance company files, and trade association directories. Somehow, out of these she conjures spirits of dead shopkeepers, and you see their fear of ruin and disgrace and their desire that their children be educated differently from the gentry who couldn't keep track of their money and who wouldn't pay their bills on time. These are the people that Becky Sharp and Rawdon Crawley ruin in Vanity Fair, the anonymous, invisible creditors in dozens of English novels about gentry running up debts with tradesmen.
It has been a couple of years since I last re-read this, so this summary is only what has stuck with me:
They were among the first masterless men. There was a currency shortage, so they had to take out loans, buy on credit, and give credit. There were no bankruptcy laws, so if they couldn't pay what they owed, they were stripped bare, and family members who cosigned on loans were stripped bare as well. They lived in continual fear of ruin. Hunt could reconstruct their lives from account books because they used accounting as a system of self-mastery, a way of holding themselves together without having someone in a big house on a hill tell them what to do. Their harsh, rigid Puritanism was another form of self-mastery, of holding themselves to account.
If you were raised to think that the middle classes, the bourgeoisie, are people of no interest, read this book. These people were extraordinary. If you are descended from them, you have much of which to be proud.

Illuminating history of the proto-middle class

This is an indispensable book for anyone interested in the social history of 17c-18c Britain. Hunt examines both men and women of the "middling sort"-- the middle ranks of society-- from several angles. Her treatment of the advice literature is particularly intriguing, as is her treatment of adolescence and youth. Scholarly, yet eminently readable.

Better than middling!!

This is an indispensible book for anybody working on eighteenth-century social, gender, or women's history in Britain or North America. Beautifully written--impeccably researched--and if you like the history of husbands, wives, daughters and sons in the family, it's a treat to read. Why isn't it out in paperback?
