Are we dangerously close to another period of savage world wars?

"Savage Century: Back to Barbarism," by Thérèse Delpech, poses the question: What are the worldwide political parallels between 1905 and 2005, and do these similarities suggest that we are, once again, dangerously close to another period of savage world wars? The author makes a convincing argument that the answer is yes.

Thérèse Delpech is director for strategic studies at the Atomic Energy Commission of France and French Commissioner at the UN for the disarmament of Iraq. The original French version of the book, "L'Ensauvagement," won the prestigious 2005 Prix Femina de L'essai. This English translation missed getting a four-star rating from me because I found it frequently very difficult to understand. On just about every page there were sentences that I needed to read over and over again trying to decipher what the author meant, and for many other sentences I was never able to comprehend what the author was trying to convey. I assumed that the problem was the translator, not the author.

I found many of her parallels between 1905 and 2005 eloquent and arresting, but it was toward the end of the book when she was discussing possible political futures for the year 2025 that my interest really piqued. Among many other predictions for 2025, the author suggests these two that I found particularly alarming: 1) the disintegration of Pakistan; 2) a significantly stronger and self-confident India in a military conflict with an economically and socially weakened China--an India that would have no trouble destroying the Chinese fleet in the Strait of Malacca.

Delpech's point of view is decidedly European. As an American, I found it interesting to expose myself to this different perspective on past, present, and future world affairs. When the author makes it clear that she believes that the United States is out of control, I cannot disagree with her, and found it interesting to see that point well argued.

This book is recommended for persons interested in international relations.

Unlike fellow war reporters Ted Rall and Joe Sacco, who are also cartoonists, Axe collaborates with a different artist on each of his comics projects. Hamilton may be the best he has ever worked with. The story is bigger than before, as well. It began in the 1980s when erstwhile altar boy Joseph Kony turned his own religious movement into the Lord’s Resistance Army, vicious guerrillas roaming central Africa, sadistically destroying whole villages and kidnapping children to make them soldiers after sexually abusing them. Though greatly reduced in numbers, the Army is still rampant. In the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2010, Axe interviewed a young teacher, two priests, and a 13-year-old girl who escaped the LRA. Axe tells those informants’ stories, sketches Kony and his band, and describes the recently more organized—thanks to U.S. technical aid pushed by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton—hunt for Kony, as well as the somewhat unstable state of that effort in 2012. About the Author
David Axe is a freelance reporter based in Columbia, South Carolina. Since 2005 he has reported from Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Somalia, Chad, Congo, and other conflict zones for Wired, the BBC, Salon, Esquire, C-SPAN, Voice of America, and many others. David is the author of several graphic novels, including War Fix, War is Boring, and most recently, The Accidental Candidate: The Rise and Fall of Alvin Greene.

Tim Hamilton is a Brooklyn artist who has produced illustrations for the New York Times, Cicada Magazine, DC comics, Marvel comics, Mad magazine, Nickelodeon magazine, and Lifetime. He adapted Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 into a graphic novel, which was nominated for an Eisner award.

it does a good job of capturing the main points of the issue ...

As someone who actually works on this stuff as a scholar, I wasnt sure what to expect, but I get all books on this subject just for reference. And I must say I was thoroughly impressed. First off, its about managing expectations. This is NOT a scholarly academic or journalistic book,but a "graphic novel." But as such, yes, it does a good job of capturing the main points of the issue in a very interesting and captivating way. I would recommend for youth readers or those who wouldnt ordinarily read up on such things, in order to generate interest. As someone with little experienc reading comics or graphic novels, it has made me wonder about similar such works that tell the story of other real-world events in this manner.

Superficial introduction to the subject and little else.

The information in this book is important and harrowing, of course, and the artwork is wonderful, but the scripts never get the reader inside the heads of the participants or give us any insight into the lived experience of these horrific events. Frequently the subjects even go unnamed (though a few are identified in a "Dramatis Personae" section -- in the back of the book), as if their identities are unimportant details. We are passive, distant observers; we are not THERE. We don't get the survivors' perspective at all. What is the point of using the comic book medium, if not to take advantage of the immediacy it gives you?

Ultimately, Army of God is a decent collection of anecdotes, rotely adapted into comics. Axe's approach fails to take advantage of the medium in any conceivably way; the pictures add nothing to Axe's perspective, and worse, Axe's chosen perspective adds nothing to the story he is telling. Why is it a comic at all? Sacco's work feels like several hundred of page of research distilled into a couple hundred pages -- the pictures provide volumes of information, and it's all from a perspective you can't get anywhere else: that of the people the events of each of his books have affected most. This book feels like a magazine feature padded up to 100 pages. It's not that he isn't Joe Sacco, or that he isn't writing enough like Joe Sacco; Axe is just not telling this story in a compelling way. He may be a great journalist, but he is not a good comics writer.

The Kindle version must be fixed

For some reason the Kindle version of this graphic novel does not allow you to zoom into the book. The text is too small to read, so the entire purchase is a waste of time.

VW Passat TDI Repair Manual

Wonderful content. I have owned multiple volkswagons and their repair manuals are exceptional. Being able to do my own repairs saves me money making the manual well worth the price. There is even a troubleshooting section where if you don't know exactly what is wrong with your car you can narrow it down based on the conditions you are experiencing. The book points you in the right direction. The diagrams of the components are clear and easy to read.

Robert Bentley produces the best automotive repair manuals. The price reflects its products. Other repair manuals simply don't cut it. Pictures, diagrams, and descriptions are clear and precise. This manual is very easy to understand for D.I.Y, as long as you're a technically, mechanically minded person. One issue I have with this manual, is the use of some pictures and diagrams from the previous 90-93 B3 Passat. Otherwise it's an excellent manual.

I like a hard copy rather than the DVD version, even though the cost is higher. Manual 1 is the engine manual, Manual 2 covers everything else and starts with the clutch.

If you have a VW, and are doing any repairs yourself, buy the Bentley Manual! They don't depreciate in value, either!

Truly "the solution" to your natural beauty pursuits

I love this book. I've been interested in making my own lotions and shampoo for a while, but it seemed really complicated. This book is so inspiring! It's the kind of book I love: friendly tone, lots of extra troubleshooting tips and advice in the sidebars, and well-designed for easy reading comprehension. Most of the recipes offer variations for different skin types -- oily, dry, mature, acne-prone -- and suggestions for different essential oils and hydrosols (the book also has a great glossary that explains what those are!) to make your homemade beauty products smell good. This book also has beautiful photography. It makes all the recipes look seriously good enough to eat :)

Mary Helen Leonard is a great writer and a real expert on natural body care. I have been reading her blog for years and am so glad she's finally got a book! I'm so excited to try making her facial cream recipe and bar shampoo recipe very soon. (Just as soon as I order the ingredients from the list of online resources in the back of the book!)

DIY Beauty at Its Best

I've know Mary Helen for ages as my little sister's best friend and the homemade beauty products I've bought from her over the years have been great - they work, they smell good, and they are PRETTY :-) I ordered her book and read through it before making up my mind about it (which I have). This is really a bible for the person looking not just to make but to understand natural beauty products. The reference material in it, such as tables of natural oils showing their properties in beauty products, elevate the book above the level of a typical DIY recipe collection. The photography is amazing, not just beautiful but compelling - the pictures really make you want to go out and start making soap. Mary Helen's writing is engaging, you get the little bit of kitch that she brings to all of her endeavors. Get two copies - one to use and get dirty, and one to stay beautiful on your coffee table.

Save $500 on Chi Kung tapes and books

It's all in here. This book was written in 78', I guess they didn't create product lines like some people I won't mention (Mantak). All the techniques I use daily, minimal theory all application, that's what we want, isn't it?
The book was like $1. That's insane compared to the amount of stupid DVDs being sold as "super chi kung" and all that other stuff, which are useless.
I would buy 100 of these books if I could, and give them to people who are serious about their daily 20 minute routine. It works.

Still using this at 100 yrs old

We recently visited one of my wifes aunts and saw this book on her coffee table. She said that she has been doing the exercises as described inside the book for many years and still does everyday.We couldn't believe that she was 100 years old.She gets around with the help of a walker and she is very upbeat and has many great stories that she shares of her life experiences. My wife and I ordered the book from Amazon.com as soon as we got home and we are now performing the exercises daily.What greater recommendation is there?

Amazing Stuff

All the years of study into Universal Principles, religions, health and diet, energy meridians, the elements affect on our health, etc. If I had know this book existed it would have short-cut my education...but then I would never have had all the fabulous experiences.

I have now bought all the other books on Taoism by Dr. Stephen Chang and in hard copy so they will be a permanent part of my library.

I highly recommend it to anyone ready to take responsibility for their healing and destiny.

The second part of the book takes the framework developed in the first part and offers a wealth of tools to put it to practical use. The most important tool is The Male Action Plan, which charges the husband with the task of becoming a better, sexier man and thereby leveraging his increased attractiveness for a better sex life with his wife. As Athol says, "whoever is the most attractive in the relationship is in charge."

The third part of the book is a treasure trove of playful sexy and romantic moves women will find charming and engaging. It's clear that Athol could have a harem of young ladies, but here he displays an endless variety of playful instigation to continually charm just one. The final section is a catchall of serious topics on what not to do, how to choose a wife, the current state of marriage law and a crushingly simple approach to dealing with being cheated on.

About the Author
Athol Kay is an innovative thinker, humorist and family man with a one track mind. He is a "Mixed Marital Artist" combining a variety of relationship approaches from evolutionary psychology, Pickup Artist "Game", sociology, biology, life experience, romance novels, crappy women's magazines, far too many books, blogging, behavior modification and cheap porn. He has distilled all this research into a few outstandingly effective tactics for gaining happiness and sex in marriage.

Athol was born in New Zealand and met Jennifer nine days before he was due to fly home after working on a summer camp in Maryland in 1991. Long distance for three years, they finally married in 1994. Married for 16 years, they have two daughters and live in Connecticut. They have a carefully balanced relationship where Athol dreams up all kinds of weird stuff, and Jennifer doesn't leave him.

The author is also aware that has painted himself into a corner by writing a book on monogamy. At around 112,500 words, it is the longest chastity belt in existence. It only chafes a little.

Wives - You want that giddy feeling you used to have for your hubby? Buy this book for your husbands!

Coming from a woman's perspective, this book hit RIGHT ON with the problems I was having being attracted to my husband. It actually tells men how to make their wives want them. It's written by a man, for men, and I appreciated that because the author gave examples with his own relationship with his wife on his daily interactions that work to help her lust after him. It made it much more concrete and real-life to us as the readers.

Not only does the book talk about why I was feeling less attracted to my very physically fit, tall, extremely athletic, highly intelligent, well-maintained, loving husband, but it gave specific steps for him to take in order to make me go crazy for him again. I had no idea it was as easy as him becoming more of an alpha-male at home with me. I knew I wanted him to be more assertive in the bedroom and generally in our married life together by making more or most of the decisions such as where we're going to eat or what we're going to do this weekend, but no matter how many times and ways I tried to tell him this, it didn't seem to compute because he's so polite with me and that's how he showed me love. This book not only explains to a man why and how to be assertive with women, but also has anecdotes of the author's personal relationship with his wife on little playful interactions and flirtation that a lot of men like my husband didn't do and didn't think to do. The author was able to put into words and communicate to my husband in a fun, comical way, what I could not, in explaining what I really wanted and needed in a man.

Be forewarned, the author sort of blames women for their unhappiness in the marriage and points the finger at women for helping to "create" men they won't desire. It wasn't until I read further, that I had to agree with him. I am one of those women who thought that by "training" my husband to do more chores around the house and by getting him to be more domesticated, nurturing and sensitive in our relationship, I'd be happier. Even though it's clear the book is meant for men to read, I couldn't help but read most of it myself. I decided to stop reading about 80 pages from the end because I didn't want to know, in advance, what alpha "sex moves" my husband may try on me. I love surprises! I must also say that just the act of reading the book turned me on to my husband more before he even attempted the new improved alpha-male with me.

This book concentrates on telling you the truth and giving you common sense, logical solutions to the problems. It may not be what appeals to some women's sensitivities and feminist-minded viewpoints. In other words, it's not politically correct, but I liked that! I've read those types of books and nothing helped my situation. I truly believe my husband needed to be "de-programmed" from the feminist mindset he was raised in and made to understand that his instincts about how to take the lead and give a few orders as the head of the family with our kids as well as with me, while also showing me his love (which he already knew very well how to do, are natural and good for our relationship. Don't get the wrong impression. The author isn't condoning any kind of abuse or jerk mentality, he's just stating the facts - that most women want and need to be dominated in their sexual relationships in order to be truly content and turned on sexually.

I plan on recommending this book to any and all of my friends complaining about their relationships / marriages. It really was a life-saver!

Fantastic Book

This is one of the most liberating books I have ever read. Pop culture would have males believe that speaking up for themselves and being a leader is somehow demeaning to women.

The feminist movement has for too long purported that the sensitive male is what women really want. They do. Everyone needs emotional closeness. But women also want men to be men. Women want men to lead. Testosterone is not the evil that the pop psychologists would have you believe. Being a man is not about demeaning or dominating or abusing your mate. It is about being a leader.

My wife is an immensely talented highly valuable career woman. Yet she wants me to be the leader at home.

The book gives married men good advice on being a better leader at home.

May have saved my marriage.

I don't remember exactly how I cam across this book, I think I found Athol's blog and ordered the book from there, but I know that my wife and I have been having ongoing problems for years and I was ready to get out.

Enter the Married Man Sex Life Primer 2011. I blasted through the book in two days, Athol's style is informal and accessible (most of the content is modified from the blog) that makes this book an easy read despite a ton of content.

After reading the book I realize that being the "nice guy" husband isn't enough to get my needs met in the marriage and have started the "plan" to bettering myself. My wife responded positively almost immediately, but was confused at how abrupt the change was. I'm in a constant battle with myself right now, trying to undo years worth of self-defeating behaviors that I thought would help. Trust me, it's worth it.

Guys, I can not recommend this book highly enough. Athol provides a fresh new way of looking at your relationship and gives biological, evolutionary, and otherwise completely rational explanations for how relationships work.

If your wife has shut down on you and you're feeling trapped, the problem may not be that you just aren't doing enough housework, like I've seen other books recommend, but that you aren't giving your wife a man that is worth being attracted to.

In sum, if you're willing to put forth some effort, this book works. If you aren't getting what you want out of the marriage, try this first. It will save you a ton of money that you'll be spending on hookers or lawyers.

Olivier Todd was born in Paris in 1929. Educated at Cambridge and the Sorbonne, he has been a reporter, a columnist, and an editor at Le Nouvel Observateur and L'Express. He has also contributed to The Times Literary Supplement, the London Review of Books, and Newsweek International, and worked for the BBC and the first French television channel. The author of numerous books–including novels, essay collections, and biographies–Olivier Todd lives in Paris.

'Malraux' hovers between hagiography and hatchet job

Olivier Todd, who lives in Paris, is the author of numerous books--including novels, essay collections, and biographies, such as his highly acclaimed Albert Camus: A Life (Knopf, 1997). In Malraux: A Life, Todd has written another impressively researched biography.

Andre Malraux (1901-1976) was one of the greatest French writers of the 20th century. An autodidact, he was an omnivorous reader, devouring works of literature, history, philosophy, and art as a starving man devours food. A man of action as well as a man of intellect, Malraux was one of those rare individuals whose life combined adventure and creativity.

His works include The Temptation of the West (1926), The Conquerors (1828), The Royal Way (1930), Man's Fate (1934) Days of Wrath (1935), Man's Hope (1938), The Psychology of Art (1947-1949), The Voices of Silence (1953), Anti-Memoirs (1967), and Felled Oaks (1971).

Malraux suffered from Tourette's syndrome, a rare inherited neurological disease characterized by recurrent motor and phonic tics (involuntary muscle spasms and vocalizations). "Malraux forged an exceptional life for himself," writes Todd, "not because of but despite and in opposition to his nervous tics. Like Mozart, Samuel Johnson, Emile Zola, and Franz Kafka, who also had to compromise with their Tourette's syndrome, Malraux overcompensated and dominated his physical difficulties."

A world traveler, Malraux sought adventures to give him grist for his writing mill. Fascinated by the East, he visited Indochina, China, Japan, Russia, and India. He was arrested and almost imprisoned for stealing a bas relief from the temple at Bantai Srey, Cambodia. He fought against the fascists in the Spanish Civil War and against the Nazis in the French resistance. Although not the second Lawrence of Arabia he envisioned himself to be, Malraux was both a man of culture and a man of action.

When Malraux engineered the loan of La Gioconda (the Mona Lisa) to an art gallery in the United States, John F. Kennedy said, "Malraux has revived the ideal of the Renaissance ... a writer, a philosopher, a statesman, and a soldier. He has demonstrated that politics and art, the life of action and the life of thought, the world of events and the world of the imagination are one." Todd comments: "John Kennedy does not believe a word of what he says. But is designed to please Malraux."

Malraux often spoke of himself as "a religious mind without faith," a description that also characterizes Nietzsche. Such a "spirituality" is in no way connected with ecclesiastical orthodoxy; one must understand the phrase not in a metaphysical, but in an aesthetic sense, with a healthy dose of depth psychology thrown in for good measure.

Deeply influenced by Nietzsche's "the death of God" (some would say "the death of the Absolute"), Malraux was troubled by the advance of nihilism and the relativity of cultures. He sallied forth in a quixotic quest for the Absolute (sans deity), first in revolution, then in Art (with a capital "A"). Hence, the title of Claude Tannery's, Malraux: The Absolute Agnostic; or, Metamorphosis as Universal Law (University of Chicago, 1991).

Incidentally, the compiler of the index to Todd's Malraux did a sloppy job. It contains only one reference to "Nietzsche," but he appears numerous times in this volume, virtually in every chapter.

Was Malraux an "existentialist"? Literary pundits disagree. But Malraux consistently made existentialist noises, speaking of the Absurd, contingency, man's solitude, man's fate (death), man's hope (brotherhood), revolution, freedom, and destiny.

Malraux was interested in pataphysics, a school of thought founded by Alfred Jarry, which saw itself as "the science of what is added on top of metaphysics." He was fascinated by all things mysterious: the enigmatic, the irrational, the unreal, the surreal. "What interests me, above all," he said, "is the question 'What can be transmitted to Man beyond what is intelligible?'" His quixotic quest for a purely secular, humanistic "transcendence" continued.

No assessment of Malraux is complete without an account of the women in his life, and Todd provides an extended exposition in this respect. He details Malraux's two marriages: to Clara Goldschmidt (12 years), who bore him a daughter, Florence; and to Madeleine Lioux (20 years). He describes Malraux's long affair with Josette Clotis, who bore him two sons out of wedlock (they both were killed in a car accident, and Josette was killed when she fell beneath a train), and his romantic relationships with Louise de Vilmorin, and later with Louise's niece, Sophie. One of Malraux's acquaintances commented, "I think that M[alraux] has been very much loved by women, but I don't think he loved in return."

An inveterate opponent of Mussolini's fascism and Hitler's nazism, Malraux became a fellow traveler of Stalin's communism (he never was a member of the Communist Party) and admirer of Mao Tse-tung, with a glaring blind spot for atrocities committed by the leftist dictators. During World War II, Malraux fought in the resistance in France, although he was a Johnny-come-lately to the fray, joining the resistance not in 1940 as he claimed, but in the spring of 1944, shortly before the Allied invasion of Normandy.

After the war, Malraux, finally opening his eyes to the futility of revolution, made a volte-face, gravitating toward the political right, and became an ardent admirer of and apologist for Gen. Charles de Gaulle, and Minister of Culture in de Gaulle's government.

Whatever one makes of him, Malraux had superb taste in literature, and no little talent as a novelist, although, as Todd points out, he is not to be trusted as a historian. Todd calls him "a compulsive liar" and again, "The lie, whether boastful, poetical, political, or risky, was a constant with Malraux." Denigrating "the fiction of objectivity, Malraux's hyperactive imagination transmuted reality into his own romanticized version of history, mythomaniacally and megalomaniacally making himself "the genius" and "the hero" of the plot, thereby putting into practice the claim of Nietzsche's aphorism, "There are no facts, only interpretation."

Malraux is neither hagiography nor hatchet job, although it leans toward the latter. Todd is relentless in his exposure of Malraux's inflated reporting of historical events in which he claimed to be intimately involved and of his numerous character and personality flaws. "Malraux's phrases, writes Todd, "were often like firecrackers. Lots of noise and sparks when lit, but afterwards only smoke."

Todd is eminently fair, however, in his assessment of Malraux's creative talent, calling him, along with Camus and Sartre, one of the greatest French writers of the 20th century. "For me," writes Todd, his [Malraux's] two greatest novels will always be the hybrid, powerful L'Espoir [Man's Hope] and his own staggering, rollicking life."

The Hero

This is the story of a bogus hero. Malraux was a great character who presented himself to the world as a great hero. Some of his exploits were misrepresented by him. Some of them never happened. A few were almost as he described them.

It must be noted that he did have an interesting life. He was a real adventurer who took real risks. Nevertheless, his life was not much like the life he claimed or implied. He always seemed to be a con-man or fabulist. He was not a nice person either.

His reputation is based his writing which was actually quite good. A number of his books are still read with enjoyment. Afew are still highly regarded. Now that it has long been established that he was not really the model for his fictional protagonists, it is possible to enjoy his books for what they are.

The author views Malraux's life with a jaundiced eye, perhaps too jaundiced. Nevertheless, this is a well-done view of an author who appeared, in his day, to have rock star qualities. in addition, Malraux's novels have survived his nonsense in reasonably good shape.
