About the Author
The author was formerly one of the Parliamentary Counsel, responsible for drafting British legislation. His drafting work includes, among much constitutional and other legislation, the Consumer Credit Act 1974 and the Sex Discrimination Act 1975. As a constitutional lawyer, he has also advised at various times the governments of Pakistan, Ghana, Jamaica, and Gibraltar. He drafted constitutions for Pakistan (1956) and Ghana (1959-1961) on those countries attaining the status of independent republics. He was also formerly law tutor at St Edmund Hall in the University of Oxford, and is currently a Research Associate of the University of Oxford Centre for Socio-Legal Studies.

About the Author
John Stevens has written many books on Japan’s martial, sacred, and erotic ways—including the seminal study Lust for Enlightenment: Buddhism and Sex—and is a respected authority on Esoteric Japanese culture. He lived in Japan for thirty-five years, where he was a Professor of Buddhist Studies and an Aikido Instructor at Tohoku Fukushi University.

A short book surprisingly full of information, fun and easy to read.

An easy fun read, well written. I couldn't put the book down. [sacred sexuality is a big interest of mine]

The book is written in the form of a narrative - a monk is seduced by a woman, confesses to his abbott, and the abbott asks the monk if he wishes to study sexuality as part of his spiritual path. The monk agrees and is initiated into the Tachikawa "school" (ryu), which includes sex as a major aspect of its (Buddhist) spiritual practices. His 1000 day training under the supervision of an older nun/dakini is described: his daily routine, the order of the training, certain of the practices, his diet. After completing his training he goes on the pilgrimage to the 88 temples of Shikoku - during his travel he is introduced to two other groups that use sex as part of their spiritual practice. Eventually he return home where he leaves the temple and winds up married (in a spiritual and physical union) to the woman who originally seduced him.

A few parts of the text are quite explicit but it is all written in poetic euphemisms - which are all quite obvious in context - the monk's "little Buddha" enters through the nun's "jade gate" which leads to the "inner temple of truth."

Everything described here is very consistent with what I know of such practices in India & Tibet and also with my limited knowledge of Japanese Buddhism. The descriptions of a few rituals, the blessings, prostrations are all seem quite realistic, and are well enough described that you have a fairly clear picture of what is being done but, alas, not in enough detail to actually perform the practices - the chants, mantras, and mudras are not detailed. There is a surprising amount of information in the book - there are excerpts from five scriptures, the six vows for novices, a list of the seventeen stages of progress, and ten illustrations. One illustration, the photo of the `jewel in the lotus' sculpture, is very convincing.

The [sexual] practices of three separate groups are described in varying detail: the Tachikawa Ryu (Shingon), a Jodo Shinshu sub-sect, and `the Fuji congregation.'

After reading the book, I have no doubt that such sects actually existed (and perhaps still exist) in Japan. I'm familiar with Taoist groups and sects in China that were very similar to the Japanese groups described here. The author, John Stevens, has impeccable credentials as a Buddhist priest and scholar and professor at a university in Japan.

While the book is complete unto itself as a fictionalized narrative, if I were to find fault it would be that it is too brief. I wish that more information about the actual practices and meditations was included, either in appendices or even as a separate volume.

Too little

This slight volume is a very accessible translation of the Japanese text. However, there is not so much as a paragraph of introductory material, so it is very hard to place the text in any kind of context beyond that which is provided by the text itself. Even a page of introduction (when was this written? by whom? is it an orthodox Shingon text or something more heterodox?) would have been very helpful.

Given the fact that the text is intended to be imparted by a teacher directly, it is hard to see how this translation functions as a means of facilitating the tradition. But because it offers no supplementary material whatsoever, it doesn't function as an edition for the general reader either. So it's a little hard to see what the point of publishing the translation this way was, other than to titillate.

UPDATE 9-21-2011 Reviewing again the author's note hidden in the back, it says:

"This account the Tantra of the Tachikawa Ryu is based on actual events, real historical figures, and authentic Tantric tradition in Japan. Like all Tantric texts, it is condensed and cryptic; it needs to be augmented by oral instruction. Tantra is a living tradition, adapting itself to time, place, and social conditions. Old texts will fade away to be replaced by new ones in a different idiom but still rooted in the Tantric experience. May many new and original Tantric texts be composed in English and other modern languages to become an integral part of world culture!"

I really don't know what to make of this. Apparently it isn't a translation. Is Stevens saying that he fabricated this thing? In that case, it would be nice if it stated somewhere how exactly he is qualified to do so. It seems rather presumptuous to me, and somewhat duplicitous, given how little transparency there is around what exactly this book is supposed to be.

About the Author
"Ronald J. Ebert" is Emeritus Professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia where he lectures in the Management Department and serves as advisor to students and student organizations. Dr. Ebert draws upon more than 30 years of teaching experience at such schools as Sinclair College, University of Washington, University of Missouri, Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu (Romania), and Consortium International University (Italy). His consulting alliances include such firms as Mobay Corporation, j Kraft Foods, Oscar Mayer, Atlas Powder, and John Deere. He has designed and conducted management development programs for such diverse clients as the American Public Power Association, the United States Savings and Loan League, and the Central Missouri Manufacturing Training Consortium.

His experience as a practitioner has fostered an advocacy for integrating concepts f with best business practices in business education. The five business books he has written include translations in Spanish, Chinese, Malaysian, and Romanian languages. Dr. Ebert has served as the editor of the "Journal of Operations Management." He is a past-president and fellow of the Decision Sciences Institute. "Ricky W. Griffin" is Distinguished Professor of Management and holds the Blocker Chair in Business in the Mays School of Business at Texas A&M University. 96 Pages of Beautifully Illustrated Designs for Moms - printed on both sides of page

It is as beautiful as the previous one “Joyous Blooms.” “My Mother My Heart” is filled with beautiful flowers, butterflies, perfumes, tea cups and many more items associated with mothers and women in general. The concept of the book is dedicated to mothers (and grandmothers) and would make a beautiful gift for Mother's Day – either for Mom to color or for you to color for her. Beyond the designs themselves, there are many pages with quotes and sayings for Mom. There is each a full page dedicated to Mother and to Grandmother where various names for each (in different languages, too) make up the majority of the design.

The designs have a good amount of detail but are not what I would call intricate. A few of the designs do have fairly small elements but those are rare in the book. What is great is that every single page of the book has areas that can be colored, from the title page at the beginning to the last page (About the Author.) That makes it a wonderful value and a really fun book to color.

I lost my mother a few years ago and I really miss her all of the time and especially as Mother's Day approaches. I can't give her this book but I can color the pictures and think of her. I can also think of my place as a Mother to my daughters. It's interesting to think that my own daughter is a Mother, too. I plan to give her a gift of this book as well this year.

I will go into more details about the physical aspects of this coloring book below. Here is an overview of what I found:

96 Pages of Hand-drawn and Pretty Designs
Printed on both sides of Heavyweight, white, non-perforated paper
Sewn Binding (many stitches versus just a few)
Designs merge into the binding
Book lays fairly flat when pressed hard
Alcohol-based markers bleed through easily
Water-based markers bleed through the page as well-loved
India ink pens leave shadows of color on the back of the page
Gel pens do not leak through the page
Coloring pencils work well with this paper

The designs are printed on both sides of the heavyweight, non-perforated page. I was able to get the book to lay fairly flat by breaking the spine. The binding is a hybrid of glued and sewn. The sewn binding is the type that has many stitches rather than just a few. Some of the designs merge into the binding while others stop just short of the sewn area. Four of the designs spread shared elements across two pages though a number more are probably designs to be viewed together. In my copy, the alignment of the two-page spreads is excellent. Also, with these four, the designs do not merge into the binding. If you hyper-extend the book, you will see a small strip of white of either side of the stitches. This allows me to get into that area to color but is not noticeable when casually looking through the book.

Because of the binding and the way the designs merge in (though nothing of note is lost in the binding), I will not be removing pages from this book. If you wish to do so, you will have to cut them out and you will probably lose some portion of the design in doing so.

I test my coloring books with a variety of mediums. I will list the type of tests I conduct as well as the mediums I used in the comments section below. Here are the results of my tests:

I must admit that I was a little disappointed with this paper as compared to that of my first book by this author. It is certain that a lesser grade of paper was used in this book as the results of my tests were wildly different. I was so surprised, I went back and double checked both books against each other – using the exact same markers/pens/pencils in exactly the same manner. The test results showed different results for each book with the new book being less desirable. While the results of the tests disappointed me, the designs did not. I still really enjoy this book and am pleased to have it in my coloring collection.

My various alcohol-based markers bled through this paper. My water-based markers also bled through to a lesser degree. My India ink pens left shadows of color on the back of the page. My gel pens did not leak through nor did they require extra drying time. The soft lead pencils went on thick with full coverage and blended beautifully. The hard lead pencils worked well and did not leave indents on the back of the page.

If you choose to use anything other than gel pens and coloring pencils, you will mar the design on the reverse side of the page. I would suggest that you use a blotter page to keep the ink confined to just the back of the page and not ruin the following pages.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who loves to color- with markers, colored pencils, gel pens, etc.

'This is a book that even the most confirmed qualitative researcher can highly recommend to students. And for any course in quantitative methods it would be my first choice. The clear and interesting communicative style draws in the reader both to an understanding of some of the basis building blocks of quantitative research but also to some of answers to critiques of certain ways of using statistics. About the Author
Professor Daniel Muijs is Chair of Education. Previously he worked at the University of Manchester as Chair of Pedagogy and Teacher Development at the University of Manchester, School of Education, as Chair of School Leadership and Management at the University of Newcastle and as senior at Warwick Institute of Education. He is an acknowledged expert in the field of Educational and Teacher Effectiveness and is co-editor of the journal ‘School Effectiveness and School Improvement’. He has published widely in the areas of educational effectiveness, leadership and research methods, and has conducted research for government agencies (DCSF, NCSL, QCA), Charitable Trusts (Gatsby) and Research Councils (ESRC).

Finally: Stats for beginners, with SPSS

At last, a book that not only explains statistics for educational research clearly, accurately and accessibly, but also gives step-by-step instructions - with screen shots - for how to carry out each procedure using SPSS. Muijs' book is a must-have for every education major, as well as for arts graduates doing postgraduate qualifications in education. I will be using it this year to introduce my postgrads, most of whom have backgrounds in the arts, to the stats they need for their courses; and I'll urge them to buy their own copies. This will not only give them a ready reference book, but will also, I'm sure, reduce significantly the numbers of anguished emails and last-minute one-to-one tutorials I succumb to in the frantic fortnight before term papers are due. Bless your heart, Daniel Muijs.
